Using the Miter Gauge

For your own safety, always
observe the following safety
precautions in addition to the safety instructions
on pages 3 through 8.
The Miter Gauge 14 is used when Crosscutting, Mi-
ter Cutting, Bevel Cutting, Com pound Miter Cut-
ting, or Rabbeting across the end of a narrow work-
piece.
Never make these cuts freehand (without using the
Miter Gauge 14 or other auxiliary devices) because
the Blade 31 could bind in the cut and cause a
kickback or cause your fingers or hand to slip into
the Blade 31.
Always lock the Miter Gauge 14 securely when in
use.
Remove Rip Fence 9 from Table 13 during any op-
erations which utilize the Miter Gauge 14.
When cross cutting with the Blade 31 set at 90° to
the Table 13, the Miter Gauge 14 can be used in
either Miter Gauge Slot 69 on the Table 13. When
cross cutting with the Blade 31 tilted, use the Mi-
ter Gauge Slot 69 on the right side of the Table 13,
where the Blade 31 is tilted away from your hands
and the Miter Gauge 14.
Adjusting the Miter Angle
(Fig. 80)
Loosen the Miter Gauge Lock Knob 109 on the Mi-
ter Gauge 14 by turning it counterclockwise and
set the body of the Miter Gauge 14 so that the Mi-
ter Gauge Pointer 71 is at the desired angle. Then
tighten the Miter Gauge Lock Knob 109 by turning
it clockwise.

Crosscutting
(Fig. 1, Fig. 80, Fig. 81)
Crosscutting is cutting wood across the grain, at
90° or square with both the edge and the flat side
of the wood. This is done with the Miter Gauge 14
set at 90°.
Make sure the Smart Guard System 11 is installed
for all "through-sawing" operations (when the
Blade 31 cuts entirely thru the thickness of the
workpiece). Replace the Smart Guard System 11
IMMEDIATELY after com pletion of dadoing or rab-
beting cuts.
Have the Blade 31 extend approximately 1/8"
(3.2 mm) above the top of work piece. Additional
Blade 31 exposure would increase the hazard po-
tential.
Do not stand directly in front of the Blade 31 in
case of a THROWBACK. Stand to either side of the
Blade 31.
Keep your hands clear of the Blade 31 and out of
the path of the Blade 31.
If Blade 31 stalls or stops while cutting, TURN
POWER SWITCH 1 OFF before attempting to free
the Blade 31.
Do not reach over or behind the Blade 31 to pull
the work piece through the cut, to support long or
heavy workpieces, to remove cut-off pieces of ma-
terial, or FOR ANY OTHER REASON.
Do not pick up small pieces of cut-off material from
the Table 13. REMOVE them by pushing them OFF
the Table 13 with a long stick. Otherwise they could
be thrown back at you by the rear of the Blade 31.
