CHECKING THE HYDRAULIC FLUID
WARNING: HYDRAULIC FLUID UNDER
PRESSURE can penetrate skin and cause
severe burns that can result in death or
serious injury. ALWAYS keep body and hands
away from pin holes or nozzles which eject
hydraulic fluid under pressure. ALWAYS use
paper or cardboard and not hands to search
leaks. Know that all hydraulic fluid
connections are tight and all hydraulic hoses
and lines are in good condition BEFORE
applying pressure to the system. Foreign fluid
injected into the skin must be surgically
removed within a few hours by a doctor
familiar with this form of injury or gangrene
may result.
IMPORTANT: The hydraulic tank must be filled before
starting engine or hydraulic pump will be damaged.
Pumps damaged by running dry will void warranty.
1. Stop engine.
2. Place hydraulic control lever in FLOAT position.
3. Fill the tank if hydraulic fluid is not visible through
the 1/2" hole in the hydraulic tank bracket.
IMPORTANT: Fluid should only be changed if it has
been contaminated by water or foreign particles. Fluid
contaminated with water will appear cloudy.
REPLACING THE HYDRAULIC OIL FILTER
Replace the hydraulic oil filter after the first 50 hours of
operation and every 500 hours thereafter.
CHECK BELTS
Replace worn or deteriorated belts. Replace belts to
accommodate belt stretch and wear in the traction
drive or mower drive. Refer to Service and Adjustments
for procedures.
CLEANING
• Clean engine, battery, seat, deck, etc. of all dirt
and debris with a brush or cloth. Do not use
solvents, harsh cleaners or abrasives.
• Remove packed grass and debris from under
mower deck.
• Keep finished surfaces and wheels free of all
gasoline, oil, etc.
• Protect painted surfaces with automotive type
wax. Lightly coat unpainted surfaces with spray
lubricant and wipe off excess with soft cloth.
CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL
1. Remove oil fill cap/dipstick.
2. Check level on oil dipstick.
3. Add more oil if needed.
4. Tighten fill cap securely.
See engine manual for detailed instructions.
IMPORTANT: Maintain proper oil level to prevent
extensive engine wear or damage. Never operate the
engine with the oil level below the "L" mark or over the
"F" mark on the dipstick.
CHANGE ENGINE OIL AND FILTER
• Only use high quality detergent oil rated with API
service classification SF or SG. Select the oil's
SAE viscosity grade according to your expected
environmental temperature.
• See Engine Manual for detailed instructions.
CHECK AIR CLEANER
This engine is equipped with a replaceable high density
paper air cleaner and an oiled, foam precleaner.
• Inspect the air cleaner daily or before starting
engine to keep it free of dirt and debris. Also
check for loose or damaged components.
• Your engine will not run properly with a dirty air
cleaner.
• See Engine Manual for detailed instructions on
changing the air cleaner.
IMPORTANT: NEVER operate the engine with loose or
damaged air cleaner components. Unfiltered air
entering the engine may cause premature wear and
engine failure.
INSPECT MUFFLER/SPARK ARRESTOR
Inspect muffler and (if equipped) spark arrestor.
Replace muffler if corroded, as it could create a fire
hazard and/or damage.
REPLACE SPARK PLUGS
See Engine Manual for spark plug type and gap
setting.
REPLACE IN-LINE FUEL FILTER
Replace fuel filter once each season. Replace fuel filter
as needed if filter becomes clogged. See Engine
Manual for detailed instructions.
CLEAN AIR SCREEN
Keep air screen free of dirt and chaff to prevent engine
damage from overheating. Clean with a brush or cloth.
Do not clean with a forceful spray of water because
water could contaminate fuel system. See Engine
Manual for detailed instructions.
