5.4 Wiring Guidelines for Component
Replacement
The following are recommended guidelines for the routing
and securing of wiring while removing/installing or
replacing electronic components or wiring on Invacare
power wheelchairs.
The following are guidelines ONLY. Location of electronic
components and wiring may vary from wheelchair to
power wheelchair according to power wheelchair model,
manufacturing date, options or accessories.
1. Before installing any electrical component or mounting
hardware, including tie-wraps, cable clamps or
mounting brackets, perform the following to ensure
proper installation of the electrical component(s):
Note position and orientation of tie-wraps
securing the wiring to the power wheelchair.
Note the wiring path along the power wheelchair
frame.
If removing tie-wraps securing several wires
together or wires that have been folded together
as a bundle, note the wires included in bundle
and how the wires have been folded together.
When removing an electrical component such
as the power module, seating/accessory control
boxes, switches or remotes note the position and
orientation of mounting hardware.

2. When installing new/existing electronic components
ensure all components and wiring are replaced in the
original position and orientation unless it is necessary
to reposition the components to allow for installing a
new component or to adjust the power wheelchair
to the user.
3. After adjustment or service perform the following
checklist:
Inspect all fasteners.
q
Ensure tie-wraps are tight enough to prevent
q
movement of wires under normal use without
deforming the wiring insulation.
Ensure wiring connections are secure.
q
Inspect electrical components for signs of
q
corrosion. Replace if corroded or damaged.
Verify charger function.
q
Inspect wiring attached to moving parts, such
q
as retractable arms or seating systems for signs
of cha , abrasion, stretching or for sections
of wire that appear visually different than the
other wires in the same area.
With the power wheelchair unoccupied, test all
q
system functions, multiple times, through full
range of motion to verify proper operation and
to verify wiring harnesses do not obstruct the
path of the system. If they do, perform one of
the following:
– Wires were damaged during inspection -
Replace damaged wires ensuring these are
properly located and secured where they will
not become damaged.
– Wires were not damaged during inspection -
Cut tie-wraps and relocate wires to a location
where they will not become damaged.
