Recovering from a BIOS update failure

If power to the server is interrupted while BIOS code is being updated, the server
might not restart correctly or might not display video. If this happens, complete the
following steps to recover:
10. Disconnect all power cords and external cables.
11. Remove the cover (see "Removing the cover" on page 57).
12. Remove any adapters that impede access to the boot block recovery jumper
13. Move the boot block recovery jumper from pins 2 and 3 to pins 1 and 2.
14. Replace any adapters that were removed "Installing an adapter" on page 62);
15. Reconnect the external cables and power cords; then, turn on the attached

1. Read the safety information that begins on page vii and "Handling
static-sensitive devices" on page 56.
2. Turn off the server and all attached devices; then, disconnect all power cords
and external cables.
3. Remove the cover (see "Removing the cover" on page 57).
4. Locate the boot block recovery jumper on the system board (see
"System-board jumpers" on page 11), removing any adapters that impede
access to the jumper (see "Removing an adapter" on page 61).
5. Move the boot block recovery jumper from pins 1 and 2 to pins 2 and 3.
6. Replace any adapters that were removed (see "Installing an adapter" on page
62); then, install the cover (see "Installing the cover" on page 58).
7. Reconnect all external cables and power cords.
8. Insert the update CD into the CD or DVD drive.
9. Turn on the server and the monitor.
After the update session is completed, remove the CD from the drive and turn
off the server.
