Assembly and Installation

Axle Shafts in the Axle Assembly

1. Clean the mating surfaces of the axle shaft
flange and the wheel hub.
2. Apply a 1/8-inch (3 mm) diameter bead of RTV
sealant around the mating surface of the hub
and around the edge of each fastener hole.
3. Install the axle shaft into the housing. The axle
shaft flange must fit flat against the wheel
hub. Figure 4.33.

4. Install the capscrews and tighten them to
105-115 lb-ft (140-155 N•m).
5. Connect the driveline universal joint to the
pinion input yoke on the carrier.
6. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
Remove the blocks from the wheels.

Fill the Axle with Lubricant

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Remove the fill plug from the axle housing.
3. Fill the axle housing with the correct lubricant
until the lubricant level is to the bottom of the
fill plug hole. Refer to Section 7.
4. Install the fill plug and tighten it to 35-50 lb-ft
(48-67 N•m).

5. Road test the vehicle in an unloaded condition
for one to two miles (1.6-3.2 km). Do not
exceed 25 mph (40 km/h).
6. Recheck the lubricant level. Adjust the
lubricant level as necessary.
