Section 3 Direct Connection with
This section provides instructions for establishing direct
communications with the Companion XL from a computer
with Windows 98 operating system.

3.1 Windows 98 Computer Requirements

Minimum System Requirements:
• 266 MHz Pentium processor
• 32 MB RAM
• Ethernet Port
• TCP/IP services installed
• VGA or better graphics, minimum screen area of
800 × 600 pixels
• Microsoft Windows 98, Second Edition
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later

3.2 Establishing a Direct Connection

Sections 3.2.1 through 3.2.3 configure the computer so that it
can communicate with the Companion XL. After completing
the steps, the computer and Companion XL may be operated
as a stand-alone system, or the direct connection may be used
to configure the Companion XL so that it can be added to a
network (see section 7).
3.2.1 Configure the Computer's Local Area Network
1. From the Windows Start button, select "Settings>Control
Panel" to view the control panels.
2. Locate the "Network" icon and open this control panel.
