Removing the key

Starting the engine
shift the transmission to position j or i.

Depress the brake pedal.
#
Insert the key into the ignition lock and turn
#
to key position 3.
If the vehicle does not start:
#
switch off consumers that are not
R
required.
remove the key from the ignition lock.
R
insert the key into the ignition again after
R
a short waiting period.
turn the key to key position 2. the indi‐
R
cator lamps in the instrument cluster light
up.
turn the key to key position 3.
R

You can also switch on the power supply or
the ignition with the key. Additionally, turn
the key to key position 1 or 2 .
Running-in notes
To preserve the engine during the first 1,500 km:
drive at varying road speeds and engine
R
speeds.
do not drive faster than 140 km/h.
R
allow the engine to reach a maximum engine
R
speed of 4,500 rpm only briefly.
drive the vehicle in drive program A.
R
change gear before the rev counter needle is
R
Ô of the way to the red area of the rev coun‐
ter.
do not shift down a gear manually in order to
R
brake.
avoid overstraining the vehicle, e.g. driving at
R
full throttle.
do not depress the accelerator pedal past
R
the pressure point (kickdown).
only increase the engine speed gradually and
R
accelerate the vehicle to full speed after
1,500 km.
This also applies when the engine or parts of the
drivetrain have been replaced.
Please also observe the following running-in
notes:
in certain driving and driving safety systems,

the sensors adjust automatically while a cer‐
tain distance is being driven after the vehicle
