Bit rate (page 44)
Value indicating the amount of video data compr
a DVD per second. The unit is Mbps (Mega bit per
second). 1 Mbps indicates that the data per second is
1,000,000 bits. The higher the bit rate, the lar
amount of data. However , this does not always mean that
you can get higher quality pictur es.
Chapter (page 7)
Sections of a pictur e or a music piece on a DVD that ar e
smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters.
Each chapter is assigned a chapter number enabling you
to locate the chapter you want.
Dolby Digital (pages 14, 64)
Digital audio compr ession technology developed by
Dolby Laboratories. This technology conforms to 5.1-
channel sur round sound. The r ear channel is ster eo and
ther e is a discr ete subwoofer channel in this for
Dolby Digital pr ovides the same 5.1 discr ete channels of
high quality digital audio found in Dolby Digital cinema
audio systems. Good channel separation is r

A disc that contains up to 8 hours of moving pictur
though its diameter is the same as a CD.
The data capacity of a single-layer and single-sided DVD
is 4.7 GB (Giga Byte) which is 7 times that of a CD. The
data capacity of a dual-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5
GB, a single-layer and double-sided DVD is 9.4 GB, and a
dual-layer and double-sided DVD is 17 GB.
The picture data uses the MPEG 2 for mat, one of the
worldwide standar ds of digital compr ession technology .
The pictur e data is compr essed to about 1/40 of its
original size. The DVD also uses a variable rate coding
technology that changes the data to be allocated accor
to the status of the pictur e.
Audio data is r ecor ded in Dolby Digital, DTS or MPEG
audio, as well as in PCM, allowing you to enjoy a mor
real audio pr esence.
Further more, various advanced functions such as the
multi-angle, multilingual, and Par ental Contr ol functions
are provided with the DVD.
Film based software (page 65, 66)
DVDs can be classified as Film based or V ideo based
softwar e. Film based DVDs contain the same images (24
frames per second) that ar e shown at movie theatr es.
Interlace format (page 66)
Interlace format shows every other line of an image as a
single "field" and is the standar
images on television. The even number field shows the
even number ed lines of an image, and the odd number
field shows the odd number ed lines of an image.
MPEG audio (page 64)
International standar d coding system used to compr ess
audio digital signals authorized by ISO/IEC. MPEG 1
confor ms to up to 2-channel ster eo. MPEG 2 used on
DVDs conforms to up to 7.1-channel sur round.
Multi-angle function (page 39)
