Patient Lying on Floor or Bed
The body of the sling must be placed under the patient's back. If the patient is in bed he/she
must be rolled or sat up to allow the sling to be positioned. Some patients are able to assist by
leaning forward from the hips. Raising the back of the bed up will also assist.
If the patient must be rolled, the process is similar to that of changing sheets with the patient in
bed:
• Position the sling next to the patient so that the base
of the sling is level with the base of the patient's spine.
• Roll the patient toward you and push the sling
underneath his/her back and head.
• Roll the patient the other way and ease the sling
underneath so that it is evenly spaced under the back.
• Bend the patient's knees up, one at a time, and pass
the leg straps underneath each leg.
Tip: When preparing for a lift from the floor, wheel the lifter around the patient's feet, not around the head. Spread
the base of the lifter and bend the patient's knees, so that one leg of the lifter can pass under the bent knees of the
patient. If the patient has fragile skin protect this with a towel or pillow.
Attaching the Sling
Spreader Bar - If necessary, lower the Spreader Bar.
Attach the straps of the sling to the Spreader Bar.
Pivoting Frame - Press down the pivoting frame handle
and attach the shoulder straps first, then the leg straps.
Removing the Sling
Removal of the sling is the reverse of fitting. In some
cases, the patient may have to be rolled, but usually the
sling can be simply slid out from under the patient.
IMPORTANT: To ensure the patient remains in an upright position, the Invacare
Pivot Toileting Sling provides buckles which must be fastened around the vertical white
bar of the pivoting frame BEFORE commencing a lift.
