Framing Construction (cont.)
For an installations using a shower door, refer to the shower door manufacturer's instructions for
any special framing considerations.
Ensure that the framing for each stud is plumb and square to within 1/8" (3 mm). Shimming will be
required if tolerances are not met.
If possible, construct an access panel in the end wall to allow clearance for servicing the faucets and
drain.
For units with above-the-floor drains, ensure that the drain piping can pass through the wall and
that the load bearing requirements of the wall are satisfied. Modify the framing or raise the subfloor
as required to obtain clearance.
NOTE: For installations with wall surrounds, fiber or other soft insulation may drop down into the
caulkless seal channel. This could cause wicking of water from the channel into the insulation. This could
induce mold, leakage, or mildew. Cover or seal any loose material that could dip into the channel.
NOTE: For units with wall surrounds, the installation of accessories that require backing or support is not
recommended. Such installations could void the warranty.
For bath-only installations, add any backing or support needed for shelving, grab bars, towel bars
or other accessories. Refer to the accessory manufacturer's instructions.
Flooring Construction
IMPORTANT! Squeaking may develop if the bath is installed over a subfloor other than plywood. In
order to prevent squeaking place a pad between the bath and the subfloor. The recommended pad
material is a spun bonded polyester landscape fabric, or spun bonded house wrap material. Do not use
roofing felt for this purpose.
NOTE: The rectangular cutout for the through-the-floor drain should be sized to fit the chosen drain
assembly. The drain connection should be made directly under the overflow drain. Leave room to connect
the piping.
For units with through-the-floor drains, cut the hole in the floor for the drain line.
Ensure that the apron nailing-in flanges can be secured to studs or install three 2x4 blocks just
behind the apron location.
Verify that the subfloor is flat and level.
Level the Floor
NOTE: Do not use gypsum cement or drywall compound for this application. They will not provide an
acceptable, durable bond.
The bath supports must rest directly on a level subfloor.
Build a dam that will keep the flooring material in the desired area. Be sure to dam the area for the
drain.
Spread and level a layer of cement or mortar on the subfloor where the bath supports will be set.
Allow the material to cure.
Remove the dam.
