Checking Fuels
Coolants
Checking Coolant Level
The coolant level can be checked
visually at the " see th ro u g h '' coolant
reservoir located in fro n t of the
battery.
Caution:
Do not rem ove pressure cap on
reservoir to check coolant level when
engine is at operating tem perature
because hot coolant can be blown
out under pressure.
To check the coolant level, the
vehicle m ust be parked on level
ground.
The coolant level m ust reach:
The m arking (1, arrow ) on the reser
voir when the engine is cold.
A pprox. 0.8 in. (2 cm) higher when
the engine is at operating te m p e r
ature.
Lubricants etc.
Replenishing Coolant
If a sm a ll am ount of coolant h a sto be
added (due to evaporation of water),
plain w ater can be added.
If a larger quantity of coolant has to
be added, a 50/50 m ixture of w ater
and antifreeze should be used.
Caution:
Do not rem ove pressure cap on co o l
ant reservoir if engine tem perature
is above 194° F (90° C). A llow engine
to cool down before rem oving cap.
The coolant reservoir contains hot
w ater and is under pressure.
First turn cap to first notch to relieve
excess pressure using a rag. If
opened im m ediately, hot scalding
fluid and steam will be blown out
under pressure.
Add cold w ater only if engine is ru n
ning. Both hot and cold engines can
be readily filled up with hot water
(see also "fuels, coolants, lubricants,
etc." , page 75).
The drain plugs fo r the cooling
system are located on the right-hand
side of the engine block and the
bottom of the radiator.
