Configuring GARP
Generic Attribute Registration Protocol (GARP) is a general-purpose protocol that registers any network
connectivity or membership-style information. GARP defines a set of devices interested in a given network
attribute, such as VLAN or Multicast address.
When configuring GARP, ensure the following:
•
The leave time must be greater than or equal to three times the join time.
•
The leave all time must be greater than the leave time.
Set the same GARP timer values on all Layer 2-connected devices. If the GARP timers are set differently on
the Layer 2-connected devices, GARP application does not operate successfully.
To open the GARP page, click Switch→ GARP in the tree view.
Defining GARP Timers
The GARP Timers page contains fields for enabling GARP on the device. To open the GARP Timers
page, click Switch→ GARP → GARP Timers in the tree view.

•
GARP Join Timer (10 - 2147483640) — Time, in milliseconds, that PDUs are transmitted. The possible
field value is 10-2147483640. The default value is 200 msec.
•
GARP Leave Timer (10 - 2147483640) — Time lapse, in milliseconds, that the device waits before
leaving its GARP state. Leave time is activated by a Leave All Time message sent/received, and cancelled
by the Join message received. Leave time must be greater than or equal to three times the join time. The
possible field value is 0-2147483640. The default value is 600 msec.
