Steering Lock

Steering is locked when the key is
withdrawn and the steering lock is
engaged. The key can be with­
drawn only in position 0.
Warning!
Do not remove key from the
steering lock while the vehicle
is in motion as this will cause
the engagement of the steering
lock thus rendering the vehicle
inoperable.

Steering is unlocked.
(If necessary, move steering wheel
slightly and turn the key clockwise
to position 1.)

Driving position.

Starting position.
For starting and turning off the engine,
refer to page 15.
Warning!
When leaving the vehicle always
remove the key from the steering
lock. Do not leave children un­
attended in the vehicle. Unsuper­
vised use of vehicle equipm ent may
cause serious personal injury.
Notes:
The following items can be operated
with the key in steering lock position 1:
Wiper, windshield washer, headlamp
cleaning system (only in exterior lamp
switch positions 1 or 2), headlamp
flasher, lighter, glove compartment
lamp, sliding roof, rear window defro­
ster, power windows, power seats,
heated seats, orthopedic seat back­
rest, telescoping steering column.
A warning buzzer sounds when the
driver's door is opened with the key in
steering lock position 1 or 0.
With the engine at idle speed, the
charging rate of the alternator (output)
is limited.
It is therefore recommended to turn off
unnecessary electrical consumers
while driving in stop and go traffic.
This precaution helps to avoid draining
the battery.
Unnecessary strain on the battery and
charging system may be minimized by
turning off the following power con­
sumers, for example: Heated seats,
rear window defroster.
