AWARNING
At the time of manufacturethis water heater was provided
with a combination temperature-pressures relief valvecertified
by a nationally recognized testinglaboratory that maintains
periodicinspec_on of production of listedequipmentor mate-
rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief Valves and
AutomaticGasShutoffDevices fur Hot Water Supply Systems,
and the latest edition of ANSI Z21.22 and the code require-
mentsof ASME. If replaced, the valvemust meet the _luire-
mentsof localcedes, b ut not lessthan a combination tempera-
ture and pressure relief valvecertifiedas meetingthe require-
meritsfur ReliefValvesandAutomatic GasShutoffDevices for
Hot Water Supply Systems, A NSI 7.21.22bya nationally recog-
nizedtestinglaboratorythat maintainsperiodicinspection of
production oflistedequipment or materials
The valvemust be markedwith a maximum set pressure not
to exceedthe marked hydrostaticworking pressureof the
water heater (150 IbsJsq. i n.) and a discharge capacity not less
than the water heater input rate asshownon the modelrating
plate. (Electric heaters- watts dividedby 1000x 3415 equal
BTU/Hr. rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictional authority, w hilemandating the useof a
temperature-pressure reliefvaivecomplying with ANSI Z21.22
and ASME,may require a valvemodel differentfrom the one
furnished with the water heater.
Compliance with suchlocalrequirements must be satisfied by
the installeror end userof the water heaterwith a locallypre-
scribed temperature-pressure r elief valveinstalled in the desig-
nated openingin the water heater in placeof the factory fur-
nishedvalve.
Forsafeoperationof the water heater,the reliefvalvemustnot
beremoved from it'sdesignated opening or plugged.
The temperature-pressure relief valvemustbe installed directly
intothe fittingof thewater heaterdesignated f or the relief valve.
Positionthe valvedownward and providetubingsothat any dis-
chargewill exit onlywithin 6 inchesabove,or at any distance
belowthe structuralfloor.Be certainthat no contactis made
with anyliveelectrical p art. The discharge o pening mustnot be
blocked or reduced in size underany circumstances Excessive
length, over 30 feet, or useof more than fourelbowscancause
restriction andreducethedischarge c apacity ofthevalve.
No valveor otherobstruction isto be placedbetweenthe relief
valveand the tank. Do not connecttubing directlyto discharge
drainunless a 6"air gapisprovided. Topreventbodilyinjury, h az-
ard to life,or propertydamage, t he relief valvemustbeallowed
to discharge w ater in quantities should circumstances demand. If
the discharge pipeisnot connected to a drainor othersuitable
means, t he waterflowmaycause propertydamage.
The Discharge Pipe:
• Must not be smaiierin sizethan the outlet pipe sizeof the
valve,or haveany reducingcouplings o r otherrestrictions.
• Mustnot be plugged or blocked.
• Mustbeof materiallistedfor hot water distribution.
• Must be installedsoas to allowcompletedrainageof both
the temperature-pressurerelief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
• Mustterminateat an adequatedrain.
• Mustnot haveanyvalvebetween the relief valveand tank.
AWARNING
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually
operated at least once a _
Caution shouldbe taken to
ensurethat (I) no one is in front of or aroundthe outiot of
the temperature-pressure relief valvedischarge I'me,and (2)
the water manually dischargedwill not cause any bodily
mjury or property damage because the water may be
ex_mely hot.
If after manually oper_Jng the valve, it fails to completely
reset and continuesto releasewater, immediately closethe
cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the draining
instructions, and replace the temperatore-preasure relief
valvewith a new one.

RELIEFVALVEOPENING
At the time of manufacture, this water heater was provided with a cornbinadontern-
perature-pressure relief valve listedas complyingwith the standardfor relief valves and
automatic gas shut-off devices for hot water supply systems, ANSI Z21.22. For safe
operation of the water heater, the relief valvemust not be removed from its designated
point of installationor plugged.
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the use of a temperature-pressure
relief valve complyingwith ANSI Z21.22 and ASME, may require a valvemodel different
from the one furnishedwith the water heart.
Compliancewith such local requirements must be satisfied by the installeror end user
of the water heater with a locally prescribedtemperature-pressure relief valve installed
in the designated opening in the water heater.
See manual heading-"Temperature-Pressure Relief Vahres"for installationand mainte-
nance of relief valve, discharge line, and other safetyprecautions.
