Configuring the WAN (Internet) Connection
NOTE
Unified Communications UC 320W Administration Guide
WAN Type:
From the WAN Type list, choose the type of Internet connection that is required by
your ISP. After you choose the type, additional fields appear, as required for the
connection. Enter the information for the selected WAN type, as described below.
DHCP:
Dynamic Host Control Protocol, the default option, is often used with cable
modems. Select this option if your ISP did not assign a static IP address to your
account and instead uses DHCP to assign an IP address dynamically. No other
information is required for this selection.
Optionally, you can enter a Domain Name, if provided by your ISP.
One disadvantage of using a dynamic IP address is that if your IP address changes,
your Unified Communications System and all connected devices will reboot.
Telephone service will be interrupted.
Static IP
Select this option if your ISP provides you with a static IP address. Enter your
static IP Address, the Subnet Mask, the IP address of the Default Gateway, and
the IP address for the Primary DNS server.
Optionally, you can enter the IP address for a Secondary DNS server and a
Domain Name, if provided by your ISP.
PPPoE (DSL)
PPPoE is often used with DSL services. Select this option if your ISP uses PPPoE
and the router obtains an IP address by using PPP/IPCP address negotiation.
Enter the Username and Password for your Internet account. Enter the Service
Name if provided by your ISP. Also configure your connection with the Keep Alive
or Connect On Demand option, as described below.
Keep Alive: Choose this option to use Keep Alive messages to keep the
connection permanently open, regardless of the level of Internet activity by
your users.
Connect On Demand: Choose this option to open a connection only when
a user attempts to connect to the Internet. In the Max Idle Time field, enter
the number of minutes of inactivity that will cause the connection to be
terminated. This option is recommended if your billing is based on the time
that you are connected.
