Chapter 1: Getting Started with SIP and
your Avaya 3641/3645 IP Wireless Handset
Thank you for choosing the Avaya 3641/3645 IP Wireless Handset with Session Initiation

Protocol (SIP)
. These handsets provide business telephony features and functions such as
multiple call appearances, call hold, and transfer over your Local Area Network. Your handset
can call other telephone numbers and extensions within your facility as well as any external
telephone number. Your handset will only work within your facility when it is in contact with the
LAN. It will not work beyond the coverage area of the wireless LAN. Contact your system
administrator if you have questions about your facility's boundaries.
In this User Guide, you will find everything you need to quickly use your new handset. If you
have questions about features and functions customized for your facility, contact your system
administrator. Please read the Safety section in this guide before you set up and use the Avaya
3641/3645 IP Wireless SIP Handset with SIP.

Overview

The Avaya 3641/3645 IP Wireless Handset with SIP is a mobile handset that uses the
Avaya Aura™ SIP call server (sometimes referred to as the PBX) and the Local Area
Network (LAN) to connect to other telephones at your workplace and on the public
telephone system. The handset gives you the freedom to roam throughout the workplace
while providing all the features and functionality of a SIP desk phone.
The handsets will only work when they are within range of the wireless access points at
your facility; they are not cellular or satellite phones.
Note:
Install and charge the Battery Pack before using the Avaya 3641/3645 IP Wireless
Handset. See the Battery Packs section below and Chapter 5 Charger Options.

Battery Packs

Three rechargeable Lithium-ion battery pack models are available: Standard, Extended,
and Ultra-Extended. Each Battery Pack provides the following amount of talk time (active
call/operation) or stand-by time. (Stand-by time is when the handset is turned on, but not
in an active call.)

SIP is a Voice over IP (VoIP) signaling protocol used by the Avaya 3641/3645 IP Wireless Handsets to send and receive telephone
calls over the computer system installed in your facility. Calls are routed and managed by a SIP call server that is sometimes
referred to as the PBX.
