How they communicate
8840 series thennostats communicate to the Aprilaire Communication Card using a proprietary protocol. This type
of communication should not be transmitted over wire runs longer than 300 ft. The Communication Card
communicates with your computer or automation system. You must have one Communication Card for each
thermostat and it can be located in one of two places. The preferred location is in the Aprilaire Comm~rncation
Panel, the alternate location is in a Model 8809 Communicating Sub-Base which mounts behind the thermostat
One of the functions of the conununication card is to translate the communication signal to RS-485, which can be
transmitted over wire lengths up to 4000 ft. Use a model 8809 Communicating Sub-Base only if the Aprilaire
Thermostat is located farther than 300 ft. from the Communication Panel Alternatively, if multiple thermostats are
located more than 300 feet away, use a separate Communication Panel for the distant thermostats and daisy chain all
Conununication Panels using the RS-485 bus.
COMMUNICATION PANEL GUIDE
The Communication Panel is a switch controlled communication bus that can hold up to eight (8) Aprilaire
Communication Cards. This allows thermostat communication (transmit, receive or both) to be turned on and off at
one convenient location which simplifies installation and trouble shooting.
Model Number Definition: 880X
-
The 'X' represents the number of Communication Cards mounted in the
Communication Panel from zero to eight (8). Order one Communication Panel per eight thermostats.
FOR EASE OF INST ALLA TION AND TROUBLE SHOOTING DO THE FOLLOWING:
Y'" Have Communication Cards mounted in the Communication Panel except if a thermostat is to be located farther
than 300 ft. away, then use a Model 8809 Sub-Base.
Y'" Use a Communication panel on all systems with more than one zone, even ifusing Model 8809 Sub-Bases. The
trouble shooting benefits will outweigh the cost of the Communication panel
