4.5 Measuring clearance between piston ring
groove and piston ring
CAUTION
Remove carbon deposits from pistons and check the
entire circumference of the piston.
(1) Remove deposits such as carbon from each ring groove.
(2) Check each ring groove for wear or damage. If it is
worn or damaged, replace the piston with a new one.
(3) Insert the piston ring into the piston ring groove. Apply
a straight edge and insert thickness gauges to measure
the clearance between ring and ring groove.
If the limit is exceeded, replace the piston ring with a
new one.
(4) When the piston ring has been replaced, measure the
clearance again, and if the limit is exceeded, then
replace the piston with a new one.
