In single mode, the sounds are still organized into 16 fami-
lies but they are categorized slightly differently from the
families we used in preset mode. We will now be using the
family names which are printed beneath each of the family
buttons instead of those names which are printed on the
surface of the buttons. These families conform to the Gen-
eral Midi standard and follow a slightly different system of
organization than the preset families. For example, Accor-
dion sounds, which are normally found under the ACCORD
button in preset mode, are located in the ORGAN family in
single mode. Similarly, string section sounds which are
normally located in the STRING family in preset mode, can
be found in the ENSEMB. family in single mode. If you have
used any General Midi instrument in the past, this system
of organization will already be familiar to you.
So, let’s try some of the single sounds in the REED family.
You’ll see that the REED family can be selected by pressing
the button which serves as the ORCH. family in preset mode.

Now we see eight sounds in the screen. You can select any of
these sounds by pressing the small button beside its location
in the screen.
In the top right corner of the screen you can see the bank
indicator. This tells you which bank of reed sounds you are
currently looking at.
