Notes:
• You might have to gently twist the heat sink and fan assembly to free it from the microprocessor.
• Do not touch the thermal grease while handling the heat sink and fan assembly.
9. To install the new heat sink and fan assembly, position the new heat sink and fan assembly on the
system board so that the four screws are aligned with the holes on the system board.
Note: Position the new heat sink and fan assembly so that the heat sink and fan assembly cable is
toward the heat-sink-and-fan-assembly connector on the system board.
10. Follow the following sequence to install the four screws to secure the new heat sink and fan assembly.
Do not over-tighten the screws.
a. Partially tighten screw
b. Partially tighten screw
11. Connect the cable of the new heat sink and fan assembly to the system board. See "Locating parts on
the system board" on page 5.
12. Reinstall the direct cooling air baffle. See "Removing and reinstalling the direct cooling air baffle"
on page 94.

Replacing the rear fan assembly

Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the "Read
this first: Important safety information" on page v.
CAUTION:
Hazardous moving parts. Keep fingers and other body parts away.
To replace the rear fan assembly, do the following:
1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer. Then, disconnect
all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer.
2. Remove the computer cover. See "Removing the computer cover" on page 77.
3. Remove the direct cooling air baffle. See "Removing and reinstalling the direct cooling air baffle"
on page 94.
4. Locate the rear fan assembly. See "Locating components" on page 4.
