CONTROLLED
SPARK SYSTEM
The
TransmissIOn
Controlled
Spark
System
TCS
was
mtroduced
on
the
1972 A12 engIne
and
IS now
used
on
most
models
The
TCS
system
consists
of
a
thermal
vacuum
valve
a vacuum
sWltchmg
valve
a
high
gear
detectIng
SWitch
and
a
number
of
vacuum
hoses
BaSICally
the
system
IS
deSigned
to
re
tard full
spark
advance except when the
car
IS
m
high
gear
and
the
engme
IS
at
normal
operatIng temperature
At all
other
times
the
spark
advance
IS
retarded
to
one
degree
or
another
Inspection
and
Adjustments
Normally
the
TCS system
should be
trouble free
However
If
you
suspect
a
problem
m
the
system
first check
to
make
sure
all
wlnng connections
are
clean and
tight
and that all
the
vacuum
hoses
are
properly
connected Also
check
to
make
sure
the
dlstnbutor
vacuum
ad
vance
IS
workIng properly
If
everythmg
appears
all
nght
connect
a
tImmg
hght
to
the
engme
and make
sure
InItial tImmg
IS
correct
Run the
engme
until
It
reaches
normal
operatmg temperature
and then
have
an
assistant Sit
m
the
car
and shift
the
transmiSSIOn
through
all the
gears
slowly
If the
system
IS
functiOnIng
prop
erly
the timIng
Will be 10
to
15
degrees
advanced
m
high
gear
compared
to
the
other
gear
posItions
If the system
IS
still
not
operatmg
correctly
you

to
check for contInUIty
at
all the
connec
tions
