2. Installing the Adapter In addition to this installation guide, the adapter package contains the following items: • One PC Card adapter • One media coupler • One adapter driver diskette • Installation guide Figure 2-1 Package Contents In the event that any item is missing, or if you find any mismatch or damage, contact your dealer for correction.
2.1 Installing the Adapter To install the adapter in your computer, follow these steps: 1. Insert the adapter into a computer Under the PCMCIA standard, PC Card may safely be "hot swapped" - it is not necessary to switch the computer's power off before install- ing or removing the adapter, or any other PC Card.
2. Attach the Media Coupler The back-end receptacle of the adapter remains accessible when the adapter is properly seated in its PC Card slot. Taking care to keep the top side of the media coupler plug up, insert the plug into the adapter's receptacle until it is firmly seated and latched.
3. Connect to the Network Medium Make the network connection by running a UTP cable from the connected hub to your media coupler. Plug one end (RJ-45 con- nector) of the cable into an available hub port and plug the other end (RJ-45 connector) to the RJ-45 jack of the media coupler.
The maximum distance from the adapter to the hub are 100 meters. The following figure illustrates the pin assignments of a 2-pair straight-through UTP cable: Figure 2-5 2-pair Straight-through UTP Cable 4. Confirm Connection When the notebook computer's power is ON, the adapter is firmly seated in the slot, the media coupler is firmly latched in the back-end receptacle of the adapter, the media coupler has a good cable connection to an active (power on) hub, the Ln/Act LED...
2.2 Removing the Adapter To remove the adapter from the slot, follow these steps: 1. Disconnect the Media Coupler from the Adapter Unplug the media coupler from the adapter before ejecting the adapter from the PC Card slot. To remove the media coupler plug from the adapter, it is necessary to unlatch the hooks and be depressing the two small latch wings of the plug.
2.3 LED Indicators The media coupler features three LED indicators: 1. 10/100 indicator On 100Mbps Fast Ethernet selected Off 10Mbps Ethernet selected 2. Half/Full duplex indicator On Full-duplex selected Off Half-duplex selected 3. Ln/Act indicator Good link to a network No active link to a network Blink Activities (transmitting and receiving)
3. Software Installation Configuration of the adapter is automatic; the notebook PC automati- cally detects the available resources and allocates to the adapter re- sources it requires. Exceptions are with older notebook PCs that are equipped with PC Card slot hardware but which have no Socket Ser- vices nor Card Services software.
3.1 Install Program The Install program provides a quick installation for the Netware DOS client users and it also provides installation instructions for other soft- ware and drivers. To run install.exe, follow these steps: 1. Insert the adapter driver diskette into drive A:. 2.
