Changing the position of the stem alters the position of han-
dlebars, brake and shift levers. Readjust them as described in
chapter "Adjusting the Tilt of Handlebars, Bar ends and
Brake levers....".
To adjust the stem angle release the angle locking bolt first. Press the
bolt to the left until the toothed washer becomes visible and the stem
angle allows adjustment.
Adjust the stem angle according to your needs.
Press the toothed washer back to the right until it engages with the
ratchet mechanism of the stem.
Tighten the angle locking bolt of the stem clamping evenly.
Never use brute force when adjusting the stem. The application
of force might damage the ratchet mechanism. This would no
longer allow a reliable, tight clamping of the stem in its adjusted
position. Risk of accident!

11.2.2 conventional Stems.

Handlebars with conventional stems allow limited vertical adjustment.
This is done by moving the stem up or down inside the fork steerer tube.
Release the expander bolt by two to three complete turns (a). The stem
should now turn freely inside the fork. If it does not, release the bolt by
tapping it gently with a rubber hammer.
With Allen bolts, you need to stick the Allen key into its head first, as it is
normally countersunk and therefore impossible to be hit directly. Then
gently tap the key with the rubber hammer (b).
Never try to unscrew the top race when you only want to adjust
the stem, as you will otherwise alter the bearing play.
Now you can move the handlebar/stem unit up and down as a whole. Be
sure not to pull out the stem too far. The mark on the stem (max., min.,
max., stop, limit or the like) should always remain within the tube (c). Set-
ting the stem to a lower position can only add to your safety!
Straighten the handlebars so that they are symmetrical with respect to
the front wheel (d).
