Oil Recommendations
(see fig. )
Engine shipped from Briggs & Stratton without oil.
Before starting engine, fill with oil. Do not over fill.
Use a high quality detergent oil classified For Service
SF, SG, SH, SJ" or higher such as Briggs & Stratton
30W, Part Number 100005. Use no special additives
with recommended oils. Do not mix oil with gasoline.
Choose the SAE viscosity grade of oil from this chart
that matches the starting temperature anticipated
before the next oil change.
Note:
Synthetic oil meeting ILSAC
GF 2, API certification mark and API ser
vice symbol (shown at left) with SJ/CF
ENERGY CONSERVING" or higher, is an
acceptable oil at all temperatures. Use of
synthetic oil does not alter required oil
change intervals.
*
Air cooled engines run hotter than automotive
engines. The use of non synthetic multi viscosity
oils (5W 30, 10W 30, etc.)in temperatures above
40° F (4° C) will result in higher than normal oil
consumption. When using a multi viscosity oil,
check oil level more frequently.
** SAE 30 oil, if used below 40° F (4° C), will result
in hard starting and possible engine bore dam
age due to inadequate lubrication.
Check oil level. (Oil capacity is about 20 oz. or 0.6 liters.)
Place engine level and clean around oil fill
Remove dipstick, wipe with clean cloth
tighten down again. Remove dipstick and check oil
Ì
level. Oil should be at FULL mark
If oil is required, add slowly. Tighten dipstick firmly
before starting engine.
Do not overfill. Overfilling with oil may cause:
1. Smoking,
2. Hard starting,
3. Spark plug fouling,
4. Oil saturation of air filter

Fuel Recommendations

Quantumr use a minimum of 77 octane.
IntekE use a minimum of 85 octane. Use clean, fresh,
lead free, regular gasoline. Leaded gasoline may be
used if it is commercially available and if unleaded is
unavailable. Purchase fuel in quantity that can be used
within 30 days. See storage instructions.
In U.S.A. leaded gasoline may not be used. Some
fuels, called oxygenated or reformulated gasolines, are
gasolines blended with alcohols or ethers. Excessive
amounts of these blends can damage the fuel system
or cause performance problems. If any undesirable
operating symptoms occur, use gasoline with a lower
percentage of alcohol or ether.
This engine is certified to operate on gasoline. Exhaust
Emission Control System: EM (Engine Modifications).
Do not use gasoline which contains Methanol. Do not
mix oil with gasoline.
For engine protection, we recommend using Briggs &
Stratton Fuel Stabilizer available from an Authorized
Briggs & Stratton Service Dealer.
Check fuel level.
Before refueling, allow engine
to cool 2 minutes.
Clean around fuel fill before removing cap to refuel. Fill
tank to approximately
below top of neck to
1 1/2 inches
allow for fuel expansion. Be careful not to overfill.
Starting
(see fig.
Do not use a pressurized starting fluid. Vapors are
flammable.
Start, store and fuel equipment in level position.
To Start Engine First Time (or anytime Touch N Mow)
Starter is de energized)
The Touch N Mow starting system is shipped in a
de energized state. To energize this starting system,
you must first start the engine using the rewind
(manual) starter, then follow steps on Stopping.
1. Place lawn mower on level surface outdoors.
2. Remove safety key
under fuel cap. Read and retain starting tips
attached to packaging.
3. Add fuel and re install fuel cap.
4. Check oil level. Add if necessary.
5. Push spark plug wire
6. Open fuel shut off valve
7. Turn safety key
toward fuel cap).
8. Press engine primer bulb

primer bulb 3 times again and repeat steps 9 and 10.
The Touch N Mow starting system is not energized yet. To
energize, See Stopping.
Stopping
(see fig.
1. Release equipment control handle
ment manufacturer's instructions.
Touch N Mow starting system is functioning properly
when a mechanical winding/ratcheting sound is heard
upon releasing equipment control handle. This is the
sound of the Touch N Mow starting system energizing
for the next start. Engine must be running to energize
the Touch N Mow starting system.
2. ALWAYS lock safety key

Starting Troubleshooting Tips
H
Check fuel level.
H
Ensure spark plug wire is connected.
H
Re energize the starting system by following the
steps outlined under Starting".
H
Remember to actuate equipment starting controls
.
according to manufacturer's instructions.
H
Ensure safety key is in the RUN position.
H
If the safety key does not lock, slightly pull rewind
cord; this releases tension in the starter.
Note: If the mower stops due to dense grass, depleted
fuel supply, or mechanical reasons the Touch N Mow
starting system will be de energized. To re start your
mower, follow the steps outlined under Starting".
To De energize Touch N Mow)
Starter

(see fig.
)
Before servicing, storing, or transporting engine, en
sure the starter is not energized.
WARNING: Keep hands and feet away from
rotating parts. The engine will turn over when
de energizing.
1. Remove spark plug wire
Engine will crank over upon actuating equipment start
ing controls, but will not start if spark plug wire was re
moved from spark plug.
Î
2. Turn safety key
to RUN position (1/4 turn
toward fuel cap).
3. Actuate equipment starting controls (Touch N
Ð
Mow) lever or button
according to instructions in manufacturer's own
er/operating manual.
Once engine has stopped cranking, Touch N Mow
starter is de energized.
4. Turn safety key to LOCK AND REMOVE position
(1/4 turn opposite fuel cap) and remove key. Mower
or engine may now be safely serviced or stored.
