Power Steering Pump Belt

NOTE!
Improper power steering belt adjustment will
result in hard steering.
With engine OFF, check power steering pump (2) belt
deflection midway between the circulating pump pul-
ley and the power steering pump pulley (position E on
previous image).
To increase belt tension:
1. Loosen pump mounting bracket screws (positions
1, 3, and 5).
2. With a breaker bar inserted in position 4, increase
belt tension by moving mounting bracket to the
right.
3. While maintaining pressure on the mounting
bracket, tighten the screw closest to the breaker
bar (position 5), then tighten the other screws.
4. Recheck belt tension.

Alternator Belt

With engine OFF, check alternator belt deflection mid-
way between the circulating pump pulley and the al-
ternator pulley (position A on image on previous
page).
To increase belt tension:
1. Loosen alternator mounting screws and nuts
(positions 6 and 8).
2. Pivot the alternator (7) away from the circulating
pump pulley (9) to increase belt tension.
3. While maintaining pressure on the alternator,
retighten the screws and nuts.
4. Recheck belt tension.
