Take a Quick Look at Windows Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker is another multimedia application that comes as part of
Windows XP. As the name implies, Movie Maker is a basic video editing tool. You
can use it to convert your analog home videos (your VHS and VHS-C cameras
create analog videos, as do various other devices) to digital format, then edit and
manage them. While these are great capabilities, your Tablet PC is almost certainly
a business tool, and editing home videos isn't a prime use for such a machine. In
addition, Tablet PCs aren't powerful enough to give you a really good experience
when working with Movie Maker 2, the current version of the program when I
wrote this. So this chapter just takes a quick look at Windows Movie Maker. It
simply provides an introduction to the program and helps you consider the pros
and cons of upgrading to the latest version if you do want to use Movie Maker.

An Introduction to Windows Movie Maker

As stated earlier, Windows Movie Maker is a basic tool for editing and managing
digital video files. With it, you can not only convert your existing analog videos
into digital format, you can edit them and combine them with other digital media.
These other digital media can be other video files, audio files (think of a music
soundtrack or a narration of the action in the video), and still images.
To start Windows Movie Maker, tap Start | All Programs | Accessories | Windows
Movie Maker. As Figure 12-10 shows, the Movie Maker window is divided into
several panes.
The leftmost pane is the Collections list. Collections are groups of items that
you will include in a movie. You can add existing audio clips, video clips, and still
images into collections. You can also use Movie Maker to import video clips from
your video camera.
