Transmissions/Driveline
Rear Differential
The mid-engine design of the R8 required a new quattro
drive concept. The transmission and rear differential are
mounted longitudinally behind the engine. Power flows
from the engine to the transmission through a double-
disc dry clutch assembly. Power to the rear wheels is
delivered through an asymmetric limited slip differential.

The limited-slip differential helps optimize balanced
handling. The locking ratio is 25 percent during
acceleration and 45 percent while coasting. This design
helps avoid abrupt load reversal reactions which may
occur if the driver switches from accelerating to braking
during a cornering maneuver.
