Important: The server Ethernet ports are set to DHCP (dynamic host configuration
protocol) by default. To find your BMC on an existing network, you will need to
identify the server by the default host name. The default host name for each server
is the last 8 characters of the BMC media-access control (MAC) address. The BMC
MAC address can be found in the Configuration/Setup Utility program, on a label on
the system board, and on a tag hanging from the front of the server. Once you have
deployed your server, make sure that you remove the BMC MAC address tag from
the front of the server so that it does not impede airflow through the front of the
server.

Using the baseboard management controller firmware update program

Use the baseboard management controller firmware update utility program to
download a baseboard management controller firmware update. This program
updates the baseboard management controller firmware only and does not affect
any device drivers.
Important: To ensure proper server operation, be sure to update the baseboard
To download the program, go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/support/
xseries/index.html, select System x3455 from the Hardware list, and click Go. Click
the Download tab, and search for BMC software; then, copy the file Flash.exe to a
firmware update CD or diskette.
To update the firmware, use one of the following procedures:
v If the Linux or Windows operating-system update package is available from the
Establish a Serial over LAN (SOL) connection to manage servers from a remote
location. You can remotely view and change the BIOS settings, restart the server,
identify the server, and perform other management functions. Any standard Telnet
client application can access the SOL connection.
Before you can perform remote management activities through an SOL
connection, you must install the Avocent SMBridge management utility program
on the server, and then enable and configure the server for SOL functions
through the SMBridge management utility program. This enables you to use the
SMBridge management utility program to remotely manage and configure a
network. For instructions and additional information, see the User's Guide on the
IBM System x Documentation CD.
