Troubleshooting and tips
Restoring the hard disk content under Windows (Windows XP
only)
The software Norton Ghost is preinstalled by default. You can back up the contents of the hard disk
with this software. This means that, if required, you have the means for restoring the entire hard disk
contents.
Backing up the hard disk contents
Start the operating system.
Call the software Ghost under Start - Programs.
You will find a detailed and clear set of instructions for backing up the hard disk contents in the help
file of the software. Among other things, you can choose whether to back up the entire hard disk
contents or only selected parts of it. In addition, you can also specify the backup location and define
whether the data is backed up in compressed form.
We recommend that you use Ghost to create a boot floppy disk (see the Ghost help file for this). You
need an external floppy disk drive to do this (accessory). You can start the notebook in DOS mode
with this boot floppy disk if you can no longer access Windows.
Hard disk contents, restoring
Start the operating system.
Call the software Ghost under Start - Programs.
You will find a detailed and clear set of instructions for restoring the hard disk contents in the help file
of the software.
If you cannot access the operating system, connect a floppy disk drive and insert the boot
i
floppy disk that you created in Ghost (see section "Backing up the hard disk contents").
Start the notebook from the boot floppy disk. This method calls up the software Ghost in
DOS mode.
Under certain circumstances you may have to change the boot sequence in the Boot Menu
to be able to boot the notebook from the floppy disk. To call up the Boot Menu, press the
F12 function key as soon as the Fujitsu Siemens Computers logo appears during the
notebook restart. Mark the Floppy Disk Drive entry in the Boot Menu.
