Setting Up

2 Determine the COM port.
You'll need to know this to set up your communications pro-
gram. If you're using a communications program designed for
Windows 95, your program may determine the COM port
automatically. For more information, see "Determining the
COM Port" on page 147.
3 Install the communications program.
This may be a general-purpose communications program or
one supplied by a specific service provider. For more informa-
tion, see "Choosing the Communications Program" on
page 148.
4 Sign up.
If you're planning to use an online service or the Internet,
you'll need to register with a service provider. For more infor-
mation, see "Logging On to an Online Service or the Internet"
on page 154.

Setting Up

To communicate with the outside world you'll need:
a modem (see the next section for information).
a telephone line.
a communications program (see "What Do You Need?" on
page 156 if you're planning on using an online service or the
Internet, or "Connecting Directly to Another Computer" on
page 159 for information about general communications pro-
grams).
if you're planning on using the Internet, you'll need an access
provider (see "Gaining Access to the Internet" on page 155).
