Specifications and requirements

Start-in-gear protection

Yamaha outboard motors or Yamaha-ap-
proved remote control units are equipped
with start-in-gear protection device(s). This
feature permits the engine to be started only
when it is in neutral. Always select neutral
before starting the engine.

Engine oil requirements

Recommended engine oil:
4-stroke motor oil with a combination of
the following SAE and API oil classifi-
cations
Engine oil type SAE:
10W-30 or 10W-40
Engine oil grade API:
SE, SF, SG, SH, SJ, SL
Total engine oil quantity (oil pan capaci-
ty):
1.9 L (2.01 US qt, 1.67 Imp.qt)
Replacement engine oil quantity (at peri-
odic maintenance):
Without oil filter replacement:
1.5 L (1.59 US qt, 1.32 Imp.qt)
With oil filter replacement:
1.7 L (1.80 US qt, 1.50 Imp.qt)
If the recommended engine oil grades are
not available, select an alternative from the
following chart according to the average tem-
peratures in your area.

Fuel requirements

EMU36811

Gasoline

Use a good quality gasoline that meets the
minimum octane rating. If knocking or ping-
ing occurs, use a different brand of gasoline
or premium unleaded fuel. Yamaha re-
comends that you use alcohol-free (see Gas-
ohol) gasoline whenever possible.
Recommended gasoline:
Regular unleaded gasoline with a min-
imum octane rating of 90 (Research
Octane Number).

NOTICE
Do not use leaded gasoline. Leaded
gasoline can seriously damage the en-
gine.
Avoid getting water and contaminants
in the fuel tank. Contaminated fuel can
cause poor performance or engine
damage. Use only fresh gasoline that
has been stored in clean containers.
