Redundant Hot Plug System Fans
Note: PL6400R 6/550 MHz models feature Compaq's newest hot plug redundant fan design that provides 7x24
cooling across all the major sub-system components of the server. Instead of a single, hot plug fan in the
rear of the server, PL6400R 6/550 MHz models now feature a dual rear fan assembly. Beginning Q1,00,
ProLiant 6400R 500 MHz models will ship standard with the same hot plug redundant rear fan assembly
currently featured on the 550 MHz model (see "Overview" illustration.) Previously, the 500 MHz models
shipped with a single, hot plug rear fan. The change benefits the customer in two ways:
Both PL6400R models (500 MHz and 550 MHz) now feature Compaq's hot plug redundant fan design
which provides 7 x 24 cooling across all the major sub-system components of your server.
Component commonality is improved between the two models, which can help reduce the cost of
spare parts inventory.
ProLiant 6400R 500 MHz servers manufactured prior to Q100 and configured with the single hot plug rear
fan meet all thermal requirements. However, customers wishing to achieve 7 x 24 cooling on their existing
base of PL6400R 500 MHz servers are encouraged to purchase the Hot Plug Redundant Fan Kit (P/N
157984-B21.)
As a final note, be assured that all ProLiant 6400R 500 MHz servers, regardless of rear fan assembly
version, will work seamlessly together within a rack environment.
