Micro Transceiver User Manual

Overview

ATI's Micro Transceiver Series of products are direct-attach IEEE 802.3 and Ethernet
Version 1.0 and 2.0 devices. ATI supports all common Ethernet media with Micro
Transceivers for thin coax (10BASE2), UTP (10BASE-T) and fiber optic (10BASE-FL,
FOIRL) LAN systems. The transceivers support a single AAUI that attaches directly to
the AAUI 14 pin connection found on most Apple Macintosh® Ethernet st ons

(DTEs).
All ATI transceivers are equipped with LEDs providing status and diagnostic inform
a-
on. LEDs make LAN install on and troubleshooting easy for the installer. An easily

accessible, user selectable SQE Test switch (heartbeat) is also provided on all mod-
els. ATI uses quality product packaging for increased reliability. ATI shows a high level
of confidence in the micro transceiver products with a lifetime limited warranty.

Preparation

An SQE Test switch provides IEEE 802.3 Ethernet SQE Testing. If required, place the
SQE Test switch to the "ON" position. The amber LED indicates the SQE Test is
enabled. If the DTE does not require an SQE Test, or if the DTE is a repeater, place
SQE Test switch to "OFF." The green LED indicates the SQE Test is disabled. Disable
the heartbeat function by turning the SQE Test switch "OFF" when the Ethernet MAU
is connected to a repeater to eliminate the possibility of excessive collisions. "OFF" is
the default setting.

Installation

The AT-MX70 connects directly to the Apple Macintosh DTE or workst on AAUI con-
ati
nector. Plug into the 14 pin AAUI connection on the DTE. When properly installed, the
connector will latch into place. Power on the DTE and verify that the Power LED is lit.
Check to ensure that the SQE Test setting is appropriate for equipment per the above
requirements. Plug a Bayonet Nut Couple (BNC) T-connector into the AT-MX70 MAU
located at the end of the Ethernet segment. Attach a 50 terminator to the vacant
side of the T-connector. If the AT-MX70 is located in the middle of a segment, connect
the "T" to the AT-MX70 and attach thin coax segments to each side of the "T." IEEE
802.3 Specifications: 185m (606 ft.) maximum cable length; maximum of 30 MAU
transceiver attachments.
Vorbereitung
Für die Durchführung eines SQE Testes (Heartbeat) gem. 803.2 Ethernet steht ein
entsprechender Schalter zur Verfügung. Bei Bedarf kann dieser SQE Testschalter auf
"ON" gestellt werden. Eine gelbe Leuchtdiode zeigt an, daß die Testfunktion aktiviert
wurde. Wird die Testfunktion nicht benötigt, oder handelt es sich bei dem angeschlo-
ßenen Endgerät um einen Repeater, sollte der Schalter auf "OFF" stehen. Eine grüne
Leuchtdiode zeigt an, daß die Testfunktion nicht aktiviert wurde. Die "OFF" Stellung
sollte gewählt werden, wenn die Ethernet MAU mit einem Repeater verbunden ist, um
die Möglichkeit übermäßiger Kollisionen auszuschalten.
Installation
Der AT-MX70 wird direkt mit dem AAUI Anschluß des Endgerätes oder der Worksta-
tion verbunden. Stecken Sie den Transceiver in die 15-Pin-Busche des Endgerätes
und laßen Sie den Stecker einrasten. Schalten Sie den Rechner ein und kontrollieren
Sie die Poweranzeige. Überzeugen Sie sich davon, daß der SQE Testschalter Ihren
Anforderungen entsprechend eingestellt ist. Stecken Sie jetzt an den AT-MX70 am
Ende des Ethernet Segmentes ein BNC T-Stueck mit einem 50 Ohm Abschlußwider-
stand auf der einen Seite. Ist der AT-MX70 in der Mitte des Segmentes plaziert, wird
an die beiden Seiten des T-Stückes ein Thin-Koaxial-Segment angeschloßen. Die
IEEE 802.3 Spezifikation begrenzt die Kabellänge auf max. 185 m (606 ft.) und die
Zahl der anschließbaren Transceiver auf 30.
