    Overview Thank you for purchasing Portman 2x4. Portman 2x4 is a professional 2 In/4 Out MIDI interface that connects externally to the parallel printer port on any IBM or compatible PC com- puter. When using Portman with a MIDI application, you will have to make sure that the correct Portman MIDI driver is installed for your application.

    PORTMAN comes with a suitable parallel cable. However, if you need to replace this cable or want a longer one there are certain requirements that you should be aware of. The PORTMAN 2x4 appears to be able to work with any printer cable. This unfortunately is not the case. A Centronics cable that works with your printer won’t always work with the PORTMAN...

    Typical System Set-Up The diagram below shows a typical set-up using the PORTMAN 2x4. Your required set-up may vary slightly from this but this general set-up should be followed. Software Installation (Drivers) Software installation varies according to the MIDI application(s) you are using.

    Windows MIDI applications to take advantage of the installed PORTMAN 2x4 driver. 1st-Time Windows Driver Installation If there is no current PORTMAN 2x4 Windows MIDI driver installed on your system, follow these steps to install the PORTMAN Windows driver(s): 1. Start Windows as you usually do.

From within the applica- tion(s), select the MIDIMAN PORTMAN 2x4 as the current MIDI device (the selection procedure will depend on the application) in order for the application to communicate with your PORTMAN interface properly.

    3. Double click Multimedia. In Windows 98 click Devices, In 95 click Advanced. In Windows 3.1, start the Drivers applet. 4. Check for a “MIDIMAN PORTMAN 2x4” entry in the Installed Drivers list. If none exists, you know the driver is not installed - discontinue this procedure and follow the FIRST-TIME WINDOWS DRIVER INSTALLATION procedure instead.

    Once the MIDI Device is set to MIDIMAN PORTMAN 2x4, the PORTMAN interface becomes available as a selectable port in the Track/Measure win- dow of each and every track. Cakewalk for DOS (Version 4.0 & Later) Note: The following procedures require a basic understanding of common DOS commands.

    About Your PC Port Address The driver for the PORTMAN 2x4 needs to be configured according to the Port Address and the Interrupt Request Number (IRQ) of the parallel port that you have the PORTMAN physically connected to. Basically, this infor- mation describes where everything is and the priority of each device con- nected to or installed in your computer.

    P2X4DIAG.EXE will test the following four areas: 1. Hardware This will indicate whether the PORTMAN, your computer, and the Centronics cable are all properly connected and working. If your PORTMAN fails this test, it could mean a bad PORTMAN or other hardware failure, but most often it means one of a few very specific things: a.) You have made the incorrect port settings in 2X4DIAG.

    MIDI cable connected between the MIDI jacks of the PORTMAN. 3. Internal Buffer Test Your PORTMAN 2x4 should never fail the Internal Buffer Test. This test checks the PORTMAN’s ability to handle the flow of data through its cir- cuit and failure probably indicates a bad chip in the PORTMAN. If you think this is the case, please contact MIDIMAN Product Support.

    Symptoms/Solutions Even when the PORTMAN 2x4 passes its own diagnostic test, it is still pos- sible that you may have other concerns. Below you will find a questions/answers-style reference on many such topics. Before consulting any of the information below, however, make sure that you have already looked through the other chapters in this manual that may pertain to your situation.

    PORTMAN 2x4 disconnected. If, for instance, you only have one parallel port on your computer, but need to use a printer or other device on that port, there is a check-box in the PORTMAN 2x4 Driver set-up that will allow you to disable this message upon rebooting.
