WARNING: Be sure to shut
the engine off, remove ignition
key, disconnect the spark plug
wire(s) and ground against the
engine to prevent unintended
starting before removing the cut-
ting blade(s) for sharpening or
replacement. Protect your hands
by using heavy gloves or a rag to
grasp the cutting blade.
WARNING: Periodically inspect
the blade spindles for cracks or
damage, especially if you strike a
foreign object. Replace immedi-
ately if damaged.
Thebladesmay be removedas follows.
1. Removethe deck from beneaththe tractor,(referto
CuttingDeckRemoval o n page23) thengently flip
the deck overto exposeits underside.
2. Placea blockof wood betweenthe centerdeck hous-
ing baffle and the cuttingbladeto act asa stabilizer.
See Figure24.
3. Use a 15/16"wrenchto removethe hexflangenut
that securesthe bladeto thespindleassembly.See
Figure24.
4. Toproperlysharpenthe cutting blades,removeequal
amountsof metalfrom bothends of the bladesalong
the cuttingedges, parallelto the trailingedge,at a
25° to 30° angle.
IMPORTANT: I f the cuttingedgeof the blade hasalready
been sharpenedto within 1 5/8' fromthe edge,or if any
metalseparationis present,replacethe bladeswith new
ones. See Figure25.

It is importantthat eachcuttingblade edge be ground
equallyto maintainproperblade balance.
A poorlybalancedbladewill causeexcessive
vibrationand maycausedamageto thetractorand
result in personalinjury.The bladecan be testedby
balancingit on a roundshaftscrewdriver. G rind metal
from the heavysideuntil it balancesevenly.

When replacingthe blade,be sure to installthe blade
with theside of the blade marked"Bottom" (or with
a part numberstampedin it) facing the groundwhen
the mower is in the operatingposition.
IMPORTANT: U se a torquewrenchto tightenthe blade
spindlehex flangenutto between70 foot-poundsand 90
foot-pounds.
