Provision for combustion and ventilation air must be in accordance with Section 5.3, Air for Combustion and Ventilation, of
the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1-1atest revision, or applicable provisionsof the local building codes.
WARNING
Be sure to provide enough fresh air for combustion.
Enough air insures proper combustion and assures that
no hazard will develop due to the lack of oxygen.
NOTE
If you use a fireplace or a kitchen or bathroom exhaust
fan, you should install an outside air intake. These
devices will rob the boiler and water heater of combus-
tion air.
Youmustprovidefor enough freshair to assure propercombustion. Thefire
in the boiler usesoxygen,it musthavea continuoussupply.Theair in a
housecontainsonly enoughoxygento supplythe burnerfor a shorttime.
Outsideair mustenterthehouseto replace that usedby theburner.Study
followingexamples 1 and 2 to determine yourfreshair requirements.
EXAMPLE1: Boiler Locatedin UnconfinedSpace
An unconfined spaceis definedasa spacewhosevolumeis not lessthan
50 cubicfeetper!,000 Btuper hourofthetotalinputratingofall appliances
installedin that space.
If yourboiler is in an openarea(unpartitioned basement) i n a conventional
house, t heair that leaksthroughthecracks arounddoorsandwindows will
usuallybeadequate to provideair for combustion. T hedoorsshouldnotfit
tightly. Donotcaulkthecracksaroundthewindows.
Equipment locatedin buildingsof unusually tightconstruction shallbe pro-
videdwith air for combustion,ventilation, a nd diMion of flue gasesusing
the methods described in example 2B or shallbespeciallyengineered. The
authorityhavingjurisdiction mustapprovespeciallyengineered installa-
tions.
EXAMPLE2: Boiler Locatedin ConfinedSpace
A. All Air from Inside the Building: Theconfinedspace shall be pro-
videdwith twopermanent openingscommunicating d irectlywithanaddi-
tionalroom(s)of sufficientvolumeso that thecombinedvolumeof all
spacesmeetsthecriteriafor an unconfined space.Thetotal inputof all
gasutilizationequipment i nstalledin thecombinedspace shall be con-
sideredin makingthis determination. E achopeningshall havea mini-
mumfreeareaof onesquareinchper 1,000Btuperhourof thetotalinput
ratingol all gasutilizationequipment i n theconfinedspace, b ut notless
that100squareinches.Oneopeningshallbewithin 12 inchesof thetop
and one within 12 inchesof thebottomof theenclosure. T heminimum
dimension of air openingsshallnot be lessthan3 inches.
B,All Airfrom Outdoors: T heconfined space shallcommunicate w iththe
outdoors in accordance w ith methods1 or 2.Theminimumdimension of
air openings shall notbe lessthan3 in.Where ductsareused,theyshall
be of the samecross-sectional areaas the freeareaof theopeningsto
which theyconnect.

sureshallbeprovided. T heopenings shallcommunicate d irectly, o r by
theducts,with the outdoors or spaces (crawlor attic)thatfreelycom-
municate with theoutdoors,
a) Wheredirectlycommunicating w ith the outdoors or wherecommu-
nicatingto theoutdoorsthroughverticalducts,eachopening shall
havea minimumfreeareaof 1 sq. in. per4000 Btuperhourof total
inputratingof ag equipment i n theenclosure. ( SeeFigure3A.)
b)Wherecommunicating with the outdoors throughhorizontal d ucts,
eachopeningshall havea minimumfreeareaof 1 sq, in. per2000
Btuper hour of total inputratingol all equipment i n theenclosure.

b) Not lessthanthesumof theareasof all venlconnectors in thecon-
finedspace.
