BLADE CARE
Periodicallyinspectthe bladeadapterfor cracks,especiallyif you
strikea foreignobject.Replacewhen necessary.Followthe steps
belowfor bladeservice.
Whenremovingthecuttingblade for sharpeningor replacement,
protectyourhandswith a pair of heavyglovesor usea heavyrag to
hold the blade.

Disconnectspark plug bootfrom spark plug.Turnmoweron its
side makingsurethatthe air filterand the carburetorare facing
up.
2.
Removethe boltand the bladebell supportwhichhold the blade
and the bladeadapterto the enginecrankshaft.See Figure18.
3.
Removebladeand adapterfrom the crankshaft.
4.
Removebladefrom the adapterfor testingbalance.Balancethe
bladeon a roundshaftscrewdriverto check. Removemetalfrom
the heavyside untilit balancesevenly.When sharpeningthe
blade,follow theoriginalangle of grind.Grind eachcuttingedge
equallyto keepthe blade balanced.

An unbalancedblade willcause excessivevibrationwhen rotatingat
high speeds.It maycause damageto mowerand couldbreakcausin(
personalinjury.
5.
Lubricatethe enginecrankshaftandthe innersurfaceof the blade
adapterwith lightoil. Slidethe bladeadapteronto theengine
crankshaft.Placetheblade on the adaptersuch that the sideof
the blademarked"Bottom"(or with partnumber)facesthe ground
whenthe moweris in the operatingposition.Make surethat the
blade isaligned and seatedon the bladeadapterflanges.
6.
Placebladebell supporton the blade.Align notcheson the blade
bell supportwith small holesin blade.
7.
Replacehexbolt and tightenhexbolt to torque:450 in. Ibs.rain.,
600 in. Ibs.max.
Toensuresafeoperationof yourmower,periodicallycheckthe blade
boltfor correcttorque.
BELT CARE
NOTE:Severalcomponents must be removedin orderto changethe
mower'sself-propulsion drivebelt. See an authorizedSearsService
Centerto haveyourbelt replaced.
REPLACING
BATTERY
Batteriescontainsulfuricacid whichmay causeburns. Donot short
I circuitor mutilatebatteriesin anyway.Do not putbatteriesin fireas
lthese may burst or releasetoxic materials.

Loosenstar knobs securingupper and lowerhandlesand
carefullyfoldthe upper handledowntowardthelowerhandleas
shownin Figure19.
2.
Removethe two screwssecuringbatterycoverto batteryhousing
and placethem to the side.See Figure19.
