Conditional text is useful for developing different variants of the same document from one
base version. By using conditional text, you save valuable time, ensure consistency, and
eliminate the need to maintain multiple documents. This functionality is especially useful
for authoring and publishing documents with similar, but not identical, content. Condi-
tional text makes it possible to manage multiple document variations within a single set of
source files.
Conditional text also automates the process of creating documents for customized multi-
channel distribution. For example, you can apply one condition tag to graphics that you
want to display only in the print version of a document, and apply another condition tag to
animated GIF files that you want to display only in the online version.
FrameMaker 8 software greatly improves the capabilities of conditional text, by providing
much greater control over the behavior of overlapping conditions. You can associate spe-
cial condition indicators with overlapping conditions, and you can apply boolean opera-
tors, including AND, OR, and NOT, to define the behavior of overlapping conditions.
You can apply a condition tag to any unit of text, from a single character to entire sections.
You can also make tables, footnotes, and graphics conditional. You can also use conditional
text to include comments to yourself for reviewers, which you can later hide before you
print the final copy.
FrameMaker supports conditional text in XML documents. Conditional text settings are
saved with XML documents, and the conditions are preserved when an XML document is
opened in FrameMaker.
