2. To use automatic chapter numbers in a cross-reference format, click to create an
insertion point at the location in your document where you want to insert the cross-
reference. Then, choose Special>Cross-Reference to display the Cross-Reference dialog.
Click Edit Format to display the Edit Cross-Reference Format dialog, then click Add.
Type a name for your chapter cross-reference format in the Name text box, then click in
the Building Blocks text box and choose the <$paratext> variable from the scrolling
list. Type "in Chapter", then choose the <$chapnum> variable from the scrolling list.
Click Done to close the Edit Cross-Reference Format dialog. In the Cross-Reference
dialog, choose the desired source type and source text from the scrolling lists, then click
Insert.
3. To set up automatic numbering properties for a chapter, make the Book window active.
Select the first chapter in the book, then choose Format>Document>Numbering. In
the Chapter tab, choose Chapter #. Set the chapter number to "1" and choose a page-
numbering format.
4. To number subsequent chapters, shift-click to select the remaining chapters in the
book. In the Chapter tab, choose Continue Numbering from Previous File in Book. You
can also choose Read from File to use the local numbering properties set for each
individual file.
