causes of SCSI errors
There can be many causes of SCSI errors:
1. Cabling can be too long, too many devices connected, no bus termination,
non-shielded internal cables being used for external applications, badly
seated connectors, tape drive has same SCSI ID as another device, illegal
bus configurations etc.
2. SCSI HBA.
3. Tape Drive.
4. HBA Driver.
5. Tape Device Driver.
6. Backup Application.
Of all of the above, cabling and drivers are by far the most likely causes of SCSI
errors.
upgrading to the latest NWPA devices
If you are experiencing SCSI errors, then having checked your cabling you should
consider upgrading your NetWare device drivers to use the latest NWPA drivers.
This also applies if you are using ".dsk" drivers, although especially for NetWare
3.x, this can require a significant amount of system re-configuration.
Drivers are constantly being refined by manufacturers, and compatibility testing on
HP SureStore tape drives has shown that using the latest versions of drivers
(especially HBA drivers) can solve many of the SCSI problems that arise.

how to obtain upgrades
HBA ".ham" drivers should be available from the HBA vendor:
They can be downloaded from www.adaptec.com
(see http://www.adaptec.com/support/overview/scsiha.html)
and www.lsilogic.com
(see http://www.lsilogic.com).
Some chipset ".ham" drivers may not be available on HBA manufacturer websites.
For example, Adaptec only include NWPA drivers for their Ultra 2 SCSI chipsets.
Novell has a comprehensive list of drivers in the "3rdparty" subdirectory of the
following patch. We recommend using the "3rdparty" drivers in this patch, (or later
drivers if available from HBA manufacturer websites or your server vendor) if you
are experiencing SCSI timeouts with either ".ham" drivers or ".dsk" drivers. The
patch is called NWPAIT1 and is available at the following location:
ftp://ftp.novell.com/pub/netwire/nsd/nwpait1.exe.
IMPORTANT. The minimum recommended NWPA patch level for NW3.1x, 3.2
and 4.1x is NWPA_UP.EXE, which can be found at the following location:
http://developer.novell.com/devres/sas/certinfo.htm.
For NW3.12 the NWPA_UP.EXE patch should be uncompressed in the
SERVER.312 directory. This also contains patch 312PTD.exe, which should be
uncompressed and applied following the instructions given in the accompanying
312PTD.txt file.
For NW3.2 all that needs to be done is to uncompress NWPA_UP.EXE in the
SERVER.312 directory
Note : NetWare 4.1x Support Pack 7, 4.2 and 5.x do not require this patch.
