configuring a tape device
In order to configure a tape for the OS, you need the transport driver, and the tape
devices configured appropriately. You can configure the tape devices by running
the following commands as root (do not type the "%", that is the command line
prompt):
% mkdev tape
For details of the transport driver, refer to the answer to the question

running tape backups?"

To add a driver you should select the option "Configure a SCSI tape drive". If you
inadvertantly add a device or misconfigure a device, you should NOT abort the
configuration process with Ctrl-C. Instead, follow the dialogue through to the
nearest point that it will allow you to quit with "q". (Aborting with Ctrl-C can result
in systems files being corrupted.)
After selecting "Configure SCSI tape" you should then select "Install tape drive".
(Note that the remove option is also present here.)
You will then be asked which host adaptor the tape is on. Pick either "alad", "arad"
or "slha" as appropriate.
You are then asked which bus is the drive on. This actually means which SCSI
channel is the drive on. If you have a dual channel bus and it is on the second
channel then the bus number is 1. Otherwise if it is a single bus system or is on
the first channel, answer 0.
Next, input the SCSI target id as per the device's setting.
Select the LUN to be 0.
Enter "y" to update the SCSI configuration.
The next set of questions have the same answer irrespective of tape:
Vendor identification string
SCSI version to which the device
complies
Response Data Format

The choice of device is now determined by the type of peripheral. For a DLT
device, choose the "Generic" type; for a DAT device, choose "DAT" (option
number 4).
Enter "q" to leave the boot string displayed when the system boots unchanged.
Enter "q" to return to the main menu.
Enter "q" to quit.
You are now prompted to rebuild the kernel and kernel environment (which
includes the device files). Perform both steps by answering "y" when prompted,
and select the new kernel to be booted by default.
You should now reboot the system and test the configured tape device.
