POWER STEERING / BRAKE BOOSTER
Both the power steering and the brake
boost
er are supplied with pressure by a
tandem hydraulic pump.
The correct fluid level in the fluid reser-
voir is important for th
e proper operation
of the hydraulic system. Low fluid level
will be indicated by the warning light (see
page 50).
The fluid reservoir is located in the engi-
ne compartment.
Checking the fluid level
§
Allow the engine to run for about two
minutes. The wheels must be in the stra-
ight-ahead position.
§
Turn off the engine and check the
fluid level immediately.
The fluid level should be between the
MAX and MIN mark (see illustration), top
up with Audi Hydraulic Oil G 002000 or
equivalent.
WARNING
§
Be sure not to confuse brake fluid
and hydraulic fluid, if the wrong fluid
is used, the systems may fail.
§
If the power steering system or
the brake booster should fail, or if the
engine is not running (for example
while being towed), you will still be
able to steer the vehicle and use the
brake, however, more effort will be
required.
VEHICLE CARE
§
Since the hydraulic fluid also
functions as a lubricant, serious da-
mage to the pump and to other com-
ponents of the system could result if
there is insufficient hydraulic fluid in
the system.
Always heed WARNINGS on page 102.
