Connecting the SAS RAID Controller to Hard Disk Drives and
Expanders
This section provides step-by-step instructions for connecting the SAS RAID controller to
SAS backplane or SATA hard disk drives, either directly or through an expander. The
figures in this section show the RAID Controller SRCSAS18E connected to hard disk
drives and to expanders, which then connect to hard disk drives.
Figure 6 displays the SAS cables used to connect the RAID Controller SRCSAS18E to a
hard disk drive.
Perform the following steps to connect a RAID Controller SRCSAS18E directly to the
SAS backplane or SATA hard disk drives, as shown in Figure 6.
1. Plug the 7-wire connector on the internal cable into the connector on a SAS RAID
controller.
2. Plug the connector on the other end of the cable into the connector on a SAS
backplane or SATA hard disk drive.
3. If you have another hard disk drive, connect it to another plug on the cable.
You can connect other devices if the cable has more connectors.

Note: The cable provided connects directly only to SATA drives and SAS backplanes. SAS drive
manufacturers use a small plastic key ring between the data and power connectors. This
requires a different connector (not provided).
