Overview
HP provides built-in location awareness in the new ProLiant servers, a
capability that works hand-in-hand with technology in the new HP
Intelligent Series racks. Together these technologies provide the rack
identification number and precise U location of the servers. This
information is communicated through Systems Insight Manager (SIM),
Insight Control Power Management (ICPM), and HP iPDUs.
For Location Discovery Services (LDS) software requirements, see the
QuickSpecs on the HP website
(http://www.hp.com/go/rackandpower).

Precautions
WARNING: A risk of personal injury or damage to the
equipment exists. Before installing the LDS modules in a
populated rack, be sure that the rack is stabilized in
accordance with all product and rack warnings. When
installing the modules, you must partially extend one or
more rack mounted devices (up to 8U of devices) at a time.
Only single devices that are mounted on slide rails are
intended to be fully extended from the rack and remain in
a safe and upright position.
To reduce the risk of personal injury, damage to the
equipment, or rack instability:
Do not extend more devices than necessary to install a
single 7U or 8U module. To prevent the rack from
becoming unstable, do not extend any device more
than 9 cm (3.5 in) from the rack.
If a device is mounted on non-slide, static rails and it
must be extended more than 9 cm (3.5 in), remove the
device completely from the rack. For more information
about removing the device from the rack, see the
device installation instructions.
If a device is secured to the rack and not mounted on
rails, remove the device completely from the rack.
For more information about extending devices from the
rack, see Best Practices for HP Intelligent Series Rack
Family on the HP website
(http://www.hp.com/go/infrastructure).
