  • Page 4 Karma Mobility KP-25 Power Wheelchair This guide has been produced to help you make the best of your power wheelchair. We recommend that you read this guide to become completely familiar with your chair. Please pay particular attention to section 1 "Wheelchair Operation".

    KP-25 wheelchairs are suitable for users who weight up to 100kg. The wheelchair does not suffer from use in extremes of temperature (neither user nor attendant need touch metal parts in normal use).

    ONLY MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE AS DESCRIBED IN THIS MANUAL CAN BE CARRIED OUT. USE ONLY GENUINE REPLACEMENT PARTS. 2.2 USING THE KP-25 SERIES Always make sure BOTH brakes are applied before getting into or out of the chair. Never stand on the foot plates when getting into or out of the chair.

    CONSUMER INFORMATION 2.3 NOTES FOR ATTENDANTS AND USERS : Do ensure that the brakes are always on when the chair is not being pushed. Always make sure that both the user's feet are safely on the foot plates and that their clothing is safely tucked out of the way and cannot catch in the wheel.

    WHEELCHAIR OPERATION 2.4 GENERAL MISUSE: Please note that our USER GUIDE contains a number of cautions --any vehicle can cause injury if misused -- use your wheelchair with reasonable care and within our guidelines and your safety will be ensured. If used sensibly and carefully, your wheelchair will give years of safe use.
  • Page 14 WHEELCHAIR OPERATION Attention When completing step 3 never put your fingers around the sides or under the chair as they can become trapped between the seat and the frame. 3.1.2. Folding the wheelchair : Step 1. Put fingers under the middle of the seat at both front and rear, grasp and give a sharp pull upwards until the chair is nearly closed.
  • Page 15 WHEELCHAIR OPERATION 3.1.4 Battery Location To locate batteries first ensure that the spring loaded safety catches on the rear of the battery carrier rails (at the rear of the wheelchair) are in the open position. Lift the battery using the handle on top of the battery box and locate support pins into the recesses in the battery carrier, then slide the battery forward.

    WHEELCHAIR OPERATION 3.2 GETTING IN AND OUT : Attention Check control box is switched OFF when getting in and out . 3.2.1 Getting in : Step 1. Engage both parking brakes. Step 2. Turn up the foot plates and swing footrest to the side. Step 3.

Always ensure that the front castors are in line with the rear wheels and pointing forwards and that the back of the chair is secure either against a wall or firmly held by an attendant.

    WHEELCHAIR OPERATION 3.3 DRIVE UNIT / FRAME 3.3.1. BRAKES Motor Brakes Electro-magnetic brakes operate automatically when the controller joystick is central with a delay of approximately 1/2 second. The controller automatically provides progressive deceleration before the electro-magnetic brakes come into operation. To check the brakes are operating correctly: switch the wheelchair on and move the joystick in any direction.

    WHEELCHAIR OPERATION Care Points Avoid finger traps. Do not touch the rear wheels or castors. Prevent children and others from putting their hands near the rear wheels or castors. Never use the wheelchair with the wheels disengaged unless there is someone in attendance as the motor brake will not operate.

    BATTERY CHARGER 3.4 BATTERY CHARGER This will be supplied with the wheelchair and will have a main plug fitted for power supply connection.     BATTERY CHARGER Please follow these instructions for a complete charging cycle. 1. Check that the ventilation slots on the charger are not obstructed. 2. Check that the wheelchair is switched off. 3. Connect the charger output plug (Fig. 2 item A) to the wheelchair charging socket (See Figs 4 in Section 3.5.2).
  • Page 22 BATTERY CHARGER Suggestion The charger should only be used indoors. Do not use near a bath, shower, sink or anywhere moisture can ingress the charging system. Do not expose the charger to external heat sources such as radiators, fires, sunlight etc. Do not move the wheelchair until the battery charger has been disconnected from the mains and wheelchair.

    CONTROLLERS 3.4.2 GOOD CHARGING PRACTICE Active Person Charge to a daily routine. Ideally before 80% discharge has occurred Charge once or twice a week. Ideally before 80% discharge has occurred.     DRIVING THE CHAIR Attention The footrests can prevent you climbing a kerb if they are set so low that they hit the kerb before the kerb climber itself. Ensure that they are set at least 4" above the ground. The wheelchair can then be driven up or down kerb of 112mm(4").

These allow the wheelchair to freewheel for attendant propulsion. When the wheelchair is being pushed manually, the motor brakes are no longer effective, this means the hand operated parking brake must be applied as soon as the wheelchair stops.

    TRANSFERS Forward Transfer - Getting out of the wheelchair. Remove or swing the footrests to one side. Move forward in the seat until your feet can reach the floor or you are balanced on the edge of the seat. Place your hands on the front of the armrests and move forwards bringing yourself up and out of the wheelchair.

    MAINTENANCE & FAULT FINDING 5 MAINTENANCE AND FAULT FINDING The only maintenance required by the user is limited to cleaning, checking tyres, battery care and charging. Any further maintenance that may be required should be performed by a Service Contractor. It is recommended that the wheelchair is inspected every six months and serviced every 12 months Do not break the manufacturer's seal on the motors, controllers or batteries...

  • Page 34 CONTROLLERS 5.4 CONTROLLERS - FAULT FINDING Your controller indicates various faults, which can occur with your wheelchair. The tables below itemises remedies, some of which, you, as the user, may be capable of achieving. We stress however that if you are uncertain of any action then do not use your chair but consult your approved repairer and show him the table below.

Below is a list of self-help actions. Try to use this list before you contact your service agent.
