ChamSys MQ80 Service Document Section 2: Testing to determine faults. All ChamSys consoles contain built-in hardware tests to help diagnose any faults that may occur. To access these tests on any MagicQ console, first power on the console. The board test mode can then be accessed using one of two methods, listed below.

ChamSys MQ80 Service Document Testing keys: When pressing keys on the console, you will see the key name appear in the command box on screen, as mentioned below. When a key is pressed, you will also see it highlight on screen, briefly red, then green. If the key stays highlighted green, it is working correctly, but if it stays highlighted red, then it is getting stuck.
ChamSys MQ80 Service Document Section 3: Disassembly of the console. Tools Required: Just four tools are required for maintaining MagicQ MQ80 consoles, as listed and pictured below. Listed from left to right, these are: • 2mm ball driver, or a small flat head screwdriver, depending on the console age.

ChamSys MQ80 Service Document MQ80 base components: Once screws are removed, hold the base of the console and extrusions together and turn the console back over. The front of the console can now be lifted from the front to give access to the inside of the console.

ChamSys MQ80 Service Document Removing the side and front metalwork: For any other repairs to the console, such as screen replacement and changing PCB components such as faders, buttons and encoders, the front panel metalwork needs to be removed. The side and front extrusions are first removed. Start by unscrewing the 10x M3x6 countersunk screws securing the metal extrusions into the PCB, as pictured below.

ChamSys MQ80 Service Document Once the side extrusions have been removed, the front extrusion can be lifted away. Note when refitting the extrusions that there are locating tabs on the front panel metalwork which the extrusions fit between. ChamSys MQ80 Service Document The Fader knobs can now be removed by gently pulling up. The large encoder (X/Y) knobs also need to be removed using a small flat head screwdriver or 2mm ball driver, depending on the age of the console. Plastic encoder knobs require a flat head screwdriver, whereas metal ones require a 2mm ball driver.

ChamSys MQ80 Service Document MQ80 front panel components: Below are commonly replaced parts used on the MQ80 front panel, along with the ChamSys part number for each of these. For more information and help on replacing some of these parts, see section 4, below.
ChamSys MQ80 Service Document Section 4: Resolving some common issues. Below are some common issues that can appear on an MQ80 console and how to solve these, including replacing faders, encoders, and keys. Replacing faders: Faders can naturally wear down with use and may end up needing replacement if noise is being experienced, or they feel scratchy, or unusually loose.

ChamSys MQ80 Service Document Replacing cherry switches: To replace a cherry switch on the console you will first need to carefully remove the key cap. Do this by carefully lifting it with either a key cap removal tool, or 2x small flat head screwdrivers, as pictured. Use gentle force equally on each side to lift the key cap.

ChamSys MQ80 Service Document Replacing the console display: The MQ80 display is available as a complete display/touch combined assembly directly from ChamSys. See below for the part number for this. The display has two connections: one for the touch panel and one for the display signal cable.

ChamSys MQ80 Service Document • Pressing CTRL 9 on an external keyboard – this resets the front panel. • Pressing CTRL 0 on an external keyboard – this resets the MagicQ application. • Pressing CTRL BREAK on the external keyboard – this shuts down the console.

To re-image the SSD in your console, you will need to follow the two links below to download both the MQ80 disk image, and the backup program required to burn this image - Acronis True Image 2020. Acronis is available as a free 30-day trial, or a license can be purchased for unlimited use.

With this method, you will need tools to remove the SSD from the console, and a SATA- USB cable to connect the SSD to your PC. Remove the 9x black M4 screws from the bottom of the MQ80 console using a Posi2 screwdriver.
