Proper use

The machine has been designed and built for domestic use. It should only be used to prepare coffee and to heat milk and water. Use for any other purpose will be deemed improper. JURA Elektroapparate AG cannot accept any responsibility for the consequences of improper use.
Before using the machine always carefully read and comply with all these instructions. Keep this manual close to the ENA and pass it on to the next user if applicable.

3-colour plain text display

Your ENA features a 3-colour plain text display. The colours of the display texts have the following meanings:

• Green: Your ENA is ready for use.
• Red: The ENA is prompting you to perform an action.
• Yellow: You are in programming mode.

Preparing and using for the first time

This chapter provides the information you need for trouble-free use of your ENA and gives you a step-by-step guide to preparing your ENA for your first coffee experience.

Supplied as standard

The following items are supplied as standard:

• Filler funnel for pre-ground coffee
• Measuring spoon for pre-ground coffee
• CLARIS plus filter cartridge
• JURA cleaning tablets
• Aquadur test strip

Your JURA ENA is equipped with the Connector System for interchangeable nozzles. The nozzles supplied with the machine may vary depending on the model.

Setting up

When setting up your ENA, please note the following:

• Place the machine on a horizontal surface that cannot be damaged by water.
• Select a position for the ENA where it is protected against overheating.

Filling the water tank

To enjoy perfect coffee we recommend changing the water every day.

Milk, mineral water or other liquids can damage the water tank or the machine.

• Only fill the water tank with fresh, cold water.
• Remove the water tank and rinse with cold water.
• Fill the water tank with cold, fresh water and replace the tank.

Filling the bean container

Coffee beans which have been treated with additives (e.g. sugar), pre-ground or freeze-dried coffee will damage the grinder.

• Only use untreated coffee beans to refill the bean container.

• Remove the bean container cover.
• Remove any dirt or foreign objects from the bean container.
• Fill the bean container with coffee beans.
• Close the bean container.

First-time use

The on/off button also acts as a power switch. When the ENA is switched off, the machine is completely disconnected from the power supply.

If the machine is operated with a defective power cable, there is a danger of electric shock.

• Never use a machine which has a defective power cable.

Precondition: The water tank must be full.

• Insert the mains plug into a power socket.
• Press the on/off button to switch the machine on.
  
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
  
• Press the Rotary Switch to confirm the language setting.
  , the language is then adjusted.
  
• Place a receptacle under the nozzle.
  
• Turn the switch to position .
  
• Turn the switch to position .
  
• Place a receptacle under the coffee spout.
• Press the Rotary Switch to start rinsing.
  

When a coffee speciality has been prepared for the first time, it is possible that appears on the display as the grinder has not yet been completely filled with coffee beans. In this case prepare a different coffee speciality.

Using and activating filter

Your ENA no longer requires descaling if you use CLARIS plus filter cartridges.

Perform the 'Insert filter' operation without interruptions. This will ensure optimum function of your ENA.
After two months the filter capacity is reached. The elapsed time can be checked with the date plate on the cartridge holder.

Precondition: appears on the display.

• Open the cover behind the Rotary Switch.
• Press the P button until appears.
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch to enter the programme item.
  
• Turn the Rotary Switch until appears.
• Press the Rotary Switch to confirm the setting.
  
• Remove and empty the water tank.
• Open the cartridge holder.
• Insert the new filter cartridge into the water tank, pressing it slightly.
  
• Close the cartridge holder. It will click into place audibly.
• Fill the water tank with cold, fresh water and replace the tank.
• Place a receptacle (at least 500 ml) under the nozzle.
• Press the Rotary Switch .
  
• Turn the switch to position .
  , water is discharged from the nozzle.

Rinsing of the filter can be interrupted at any time. To this purpose turn the switch clockwise.
The water may be slightly discoloured. This is not harmful to health and does not affect the taste.

Rinsing of the filter stops automatically,

• Turn the switch to position .
  
  The filter is now activated.

Determining and adjusting the water hardness

The harder the water, the more frequently the ENA requires descaling. It is therefore important to adjust the water hardness.

It is not possible to adjust the water hardness if the CLARIS plus filter cartridge is used and activated.
The water hardness can be adjusted between 1° dH and 30° dH. It can also be deactivated, which means that the ENA will not indicate when it has to be descaled.

The Aquadur test strip supplied as standard can be used to determine the water hardness.

• Hold the test strip briefly (for one second) under running water.
• Shake off the water.
• Wait for approximately 1 minute.
• Read the degree of water hardness from the discolouration of the Aquadur test strip and the description on the packaging.
  The water hardness can then be adjusted.

• Open the cover behind the Rotary Switch.
• Press the P button until appears.
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch to enter the programme item.
  
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch to confirm the setting.
  , the water hardness is then adjusted.

Adjusting grinder

You can adjust the grinder continuously to suit the roast of your coffee.

If you adjust the fineness of grind when the grinder is not operating, the grinding wheel could be damaged.

• Only adjust the fineness of grind when the grinder is running.

The fineness of grind setting is correct if the coffee flows regularly from the coffee spout.
A fine, thick crema is also formed.
Our recommendations:

• Select a fine setting for a light roast.
  • If the fineness of grind setting is too fine, the coffee only drips from the coffee spout.
    
• Select a coarse setting for a darker roast.
  • If the fineness of grind is too coarse the coffee flows too quickly from the coffee spout.

• Place the cup under the coffee spout.
• Press the Rotary Switch to start coffee preparation.
• Turn the fineness of the grinding wheel to the desired position while the grinder is running.

Switching on the machine

When the ENA is switched on, a prompt to perform a rinse operation automatically appears.

• Press the on/off button to switch the ENA on.
  
• Place a receptacle under the coffee spout.
• Press the Rotary Switch to start rinsing.

Switching off the machine

When the ENA is switched off, the system is automatically rinsed if a coffee speciality has been prepared.

• Place a receptacle under the coffee spout.
• Press the on/off button .

The on/off button also acts as a power switch. When the ENA is switched off, the machine is completely disconnected from the power supply.

Preparation

Barista tips

A 'barista' is someone who is a professional at preparing espresso and coffee. The barista knows every coffee speciality and is a master at preparing perfect beverages. In conjunction with your JURA ENA you too can achieve perfect results.
In addition to the simple preparation at the touch of a button, you can also adapt the coffee or espresso to suit your own individual taste. Various setting options are provided to this purpose. Give it a try:

• Coffee strength: The coffee strength can be changed before preparation or during the grinding operation by turning the Rotary Switch. This setting changes the coffee powder quantity. The larger the quantity of coffee powder which is used to make the coffee, the stronger and more intensive the coffee speciality will taste.
• Fineness of grind: In the ENA the coffee beans are freshly ground each time a coffee speciality is prepared. The fineness of grind has a considerable influence on the taste of the coffee. The fineness of grind is adjusted during grinding.
• Temperature: In programming mode on the ENA you can adjust the temperature of the coffee specialities. The temperature can affect the taste of the coffee and must be adapted to suit individual tastes and the type of coffee bean.
• Height-adjustable coffee spout: The height of the coffee spout can be adjusted on a continuous scale as required to suit the size of your coffee cups. The distance between the coffee spout and the edge of the cup should be as small as possible. This prevents coffee splashing on the machine and produces a fine, thick crema.

In addition remember the following barista tips:

• Store your coffee in a dry place. Oxygen, light, heat and moisture will spoil the coffee.
• Use only fresh, cold water so that the coffee aroma can optimally unfold.
• To enjoy perfect coffee, change the water every day.
• Pre-heat your cups.
• Use a teaspoon for sugar and do not use sugar lumps to ensure that the crema or milk foam are not spoilt.

1 coffee at the touch of a button

Precondition: appears on the display.

• Place the cup under the coffee spout.
• Press the Rotary Switch to start coffee preparation.
  During grinding the strength of the coffee is briefly displayed.
  , the pre-set amount of water flows into the cup, preparation stops automatically.
  

2 coffees at the touch of a button

Precondition: appears on the display.

• Place two cups under the coffee spout.
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch to start coffee preparation.
  , the pre-set amount of water flows into the cups, preparation stops automatically.
  

Pre-ground coffee

You can also use a second coffee blend in the powder chute for pre-ground coffee.

Never add more than two level measuring spoons of pre-ground coffee.
Do not use very finely-ground coffee. Very fine coffee can block up the system so that the coffee only comes out in drips.
If the filled amount of pre-ground coffee was insufficient, NOT ENOUGH PRE-GROUND is displayed and the ENA stops operation.
The desired coffee speciality must be prepared within approx. one minute after filling with the pre-ground coffee. Otherwise the ENA stops the operation and is ready to use again.

Example: Preparing a cup of coffee using pre-ground coffee.
Precondition: is shown on the display.

• Place the cup under the coffee spout.
• Open the powder chute.
  
• Place one level measuring spoon of pre-ground coffee into the filler funnel.
  
• Remove the filler funnel.
• Close the powder chute.
  
• Press the Rotary Switch to start coffee preparation.
  , the pre-set amount of water flows into the cup, preparation stops automatically.
  

It is also possible to prepare two cups of pre-ground coffee. To this purpose place two level measuring spoons of pre-ground coffee into the filler funnel. Turn the Rotary Switch to and press to start coffee preparation.

One-off setting before and during preparation

The coffee strength can be changed before preparation or during the grinding operation.
The following coffee strength options are possible for 1 coffee:

• Mild
• Normal
• Strong

2 coffees are always prepared with the coffee strength 'mild'.
The pre-set amount of water can be changed during the brewing operation by turning the Rotary Switch.

One-off settings before and during coffee preparation always follow this model. These settings are not saved.

Example: Changing the coffee strength of 1 coffee before preparation from to .
Precondition: is shown on the display.

• Place the cup under the coffee spout.
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
  During grinding the coffee strength is displayed.
  , the pre-set amount of water flows into the cup, preparation stops automatically.
  

Entering a default setting for the amount of water for a cup size

A default setting can be entered for the amount of water for 1 coffee. When preparing 2 coffees this amount is dispensed per cup.

Precondition: is shown on the display.

• Place the cup under the coffee spout.
• Press the Rotary Switch and hold it down. During grinding the strength of the coffee is displayed.
• Continue to hold the Rotary Switch down until appears. The coffee flows into the cup.
• Press the Rotary Switch again when enough coffee has been filled into the cup.
  , the default setting for the amount of water for one coffee has been entered.
  

This setting can be changed at any time by repeating the above procedure.

Cappuccino with the Professional Cappuccino Frother

Precondition: is shown on the display.

• Remove the protective cover from the Professional Cappuccino Frother.
• Connect the milk pipe to the nozzle.
• Insert the other end of the milk pipe into a milk carton or connect it to a milk container.
• Place a cup under the nozzle.
• Set the selector lever of the nozzle to the milk foam position.
  
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch .
  
  appears as soon as the ENA is sufficiently heated.
• Turn the switch to position .
  STEAM, the milk foam is being prepared.
• Turn the switch clockwise to position when there is sufficient milk foam in the cup.

You can prepare more milk foam within about 40 seconds.

• Place the cup under the coffee spout.
• Press the Rotary Switch to start coffee preparation.
  , the pre-set amount of water flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically.
  To ensure that the Professional Cappuccino Frother works perfectly, it should be rinsed and cleaned regularly (refer to Chapter 'Maintenance – Professional Cappuccino Frother').

Cappuccino with the Easy Cappuccino Frother

Precondition: is shown on the display.

• Remove the protective cover from the Easy Cappuccino Frother.
• Connect the milk pipe to the nozzle.
• Insert the other end of the milk pipe into a milk carton or connect it to a milk container.
• Place a cup under the nozzle.
  
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch .
  
  appears as soon as the ENA is sufficiently heated.
• Turn the switch to position .
  , the milk foam is being prepared.
• Turn the switch clockwise to position when there is sufficient milk foam in the cup.

You can prepare more milk foam within about 40 seconds.

• Place the cup under the coffee spout.

Cappuccino with the 2-stage frothing nozzle

Precondition: is shown on the display.

• Push the 2-stage frothing nozzle to the lower position.
• Place a cup of milk below the 2-stage frothing nozzle and immerse the nozzle in the milk.
  

If the nozzle does not reach into the cup, lift the cup towards the nozzle.

• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch .
  
  appears as soon as the ENA is sufficiently heated.
• Turn the switch to position .
  , the milk is foamed by the hot steam.
• Turn the switch to position when the milk foam has reached the required consistency.

You can prepare more steam within about 40 seconds.

• Place the cup under the coffee spout.
• Press the Rotary Switch to start coffee preparation.

  To ensure that the 2-stage frothing nozzle works perfectly, it should be rinsed regularly (refer to Chapter 'Maintenance – Dismantling and rinsing the 2-stage frothing nozzle').

Heating milk with the Professional Cappuccino Frother

Precondition: appears on the display.

• Remove the protective cover from the Professional Cappuccino Frother.
• Connect the milk pipe to the nozzle.
• Insert the other end of the milk pipe into a milk carton or connect it to a milk container.
• Place a cup under the nozzle.
• Set the selector lever of the nozzle to the milk position.
  
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch .
  
  appears as soon as the ENA is sufficiently heated.
• Turn the switch to position .
  , the hot milk is being prepared.
• Turn the switch clockwise to position when there is sufficient milk in the cup.

You can prepare more hot milk within about 40 seconds.

To ensure that the Professional Cappuccino Frother works perfectly, it should be rinsed and cleaned regularly (refer to Chapter 'Maintenance – Professional Cappuccino Frother').

Heating milk with the 2-stage frothing nozzle

Precondition: appears on the display.

• Push the 2-stage frothing nozzle to the top position.
• Place a cup of milk below the 2-stage frothing nozzle and immerse the nozzle in the milk.
  

If the nozzle does not reach into the cup, lift the cup towards the nozzle.

• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch .
  
  appears as soon as the ENA is sufficiently heated.
• Turn the switch to position .
  , the milk is heated by the hot steam.
• Turn the switch to position as soon as the required temperature is reached.

You can prepare more steam within about 40 seconds. To ensure that the 2-stage frothing nozzle works perfectly, it should be rinsed regularly (refer to Chapter 'Maintenance – Dismantling and rinsing the 2-stage frothing nozzle').

Hot water

To prepare hot water, attach either the hot water nozzle or the 2-stage frothing nozzle to the Connector System

There is a danger of scalding from hot water splashes.

• Avoid direct contact with the skin.

Precondition: appears on the display.

• Place a cup under the nozzle.
• Turn the switch to position .

Default settings in programming mode

The following applies when preparing 2 coffees:

• The amount of water set for 1 coffee is dispensed per cup when 2 cups are prepared.
• 2 coffees are always prepared with the coffee strength 'mild'.
• 2 coffees are prepared at the same temperature which is set for 1 coffee.

Default settings in programming mode always follow the same model.

Example: Changing the default setting for the strength of one coffee from to .

• Open the cover behind the Rotary Switch.
• Press the P button until appears.

Energy-saving mode

A default energy-saving mode (E.S.M. ) setting can be selected on the ENA.

Programme item

• • The ENA is then in constant stand-by mode.
  • All coffee products as well as hot water can be prepared without having to wait.
• • After approx. 5 minutes the ENA switches to the energy-saving temperature and is not ready for use.
  • Before coffee or hot water is prepared, the machine heats up.

Example: Changing the energy-saving mode from to .
Precondition: appears on the display.

• Open the cover behind the Rotary Switch.
• Press the P button until appears.
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.

Automatic switch-off

You can save energy with the automatic switchoff function on the ENA.

The automatic switch-off time can be set to between 0.5 and 9 hours or deactivated ( ).

Maintenance

The ENA has the following integrated maintenance programmes:

• Rinse machine
• Change filter
• Clean machine
• Descale machine

Clean or descale the machine or change the filter whenever the appropriate indicator lights up.

Maintenance tips

To ensure a long service life and the best possible coffee quality, the ENA requires the following daily care:

• Empty the coffee grounds container and drip tray and rinse with warm water.
• Rinse the water tank with clean water.
• Wipe the surface of the machine with a damp cloth.
• Rinse the nozzle regularly if it is used to warm or froth milk.

Rinsing the machine manually

When the ENA is switched on, a prompt to perform a rinse operation automatically appears after heating. When the ENA is switched off, the system is automatically rinsed if a coffee speciality has been prepared. The 'Rinse machine' operation can be manually initiated.

Precondition: appears on the display.

• Place a receptacle under the coffee spout.
• Open the cover behind the Rotary Switch.
• Press the P button until appears.
• Press the Rotary Switch to enter the programme item.
  
• Press the Rotary Switch to start rinsing.
  , rinsing stops automatically.
  

Changing the filter following a prompt

After 50 litres of water have flowed through the filter, its capacity is reached. The ENA automatically prompts you to replace the filter.
After two months the filter capacity is reached. The elapsed time can be checked with the date plate on the cartridge holder.
If the CLARIS plus filter cartridge is not activated, you will not be prompted to change the filter.

Precondition: is displayed.

• Open the cover behind the Rotary Switch.
• Press the maintenance button .
  
• Remove and empty the water tank.
• Open the cartridge holder and remove the old filter cartridge.
• Insert the filter cartridge into the water tank, exerting slight pressure.
  
• Close the cartridge holder. It will click into place audibly.
• Fill the water tank with cold, fresh water and replace the tank.
• Place a receptacle (at least 500 ml) under the nozzle.
• Press the Rotary Switch .
  
• Turn the switch to position .
  , water is discharged from the nozzle.

Changing the filter manually

The 'Change filter' operation can be manually initiated.

Precondition: appears on the display.

• Open the cover behind the Rotary Switch.
• Press the P button until appears.
• Press the Rotary Switch to enter the programme item.
  
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch .
  
• Continue with the third prompt to take action (indicated by • ), as described in the section 'Changing the filter following a prompt'.

Cleaning the machine following a prompt

After 180 coffee preparations or 80 switch-on rinses, the ENA will prompt you to clean the machine.

If the wrong cleaning agent is used, the machine could be damaged and/or detergent residues could be left in the water.

• Only use original JURA care products.

The cleaning programme only lasts about 15 minutes.
Do not interrupt the cleaning programme. The quality of cleaning will be impaired if you do so.

Descaling the machine following a prompt

The ENA builds up limescale deposits over time and automatically prompts you to descale the machine when necessary. The degree of build-up depends on the hardness of the water.

If the descaling agent comes into contact with the skin or eyes, this can cause irritation.

• Avoid contact with the skin or eyes.
• Rinse the descaling agent off with clean water. Should you get any descaling agent in your eye, consult a doctor.

Risk of damage to the machine and residues in the water if the wrong descaling agent is used.

• Only use original JURA care products.

Risk of damage to the machine if the descaling operation is interrupted.

• Do not interrupt the descaling operation.

Risk of damage if the descaling agent comes into contact with sensitive surfaces.

• Remove splashes immediately.

The descaling programme lasts approx. 40 minutes.
JURA descaling tablets are available from stockists.
If a CLARIS plus filter cartridge is used and activated, you will not be prompted to descale the machine.

Precondition: is displayed.

• Open the cover behind the Rotary Switch.
• Press the maintenance button .
  
• Empty the coffee grounds container and drip tray and replace.
  AGENT IN TANK
• Remove and empty the water tank.
• Completely dissolve the contents of one blister (3 JURA descaling tablets) in a container holding 500 ml of water. This may take several minutes.
  
• Pour the solution into the empty water tank and replace the tank.
  
• Carefully remove the nozzle from the Connector System.
• Place a receptacle (500 ml min.) under the Connector System.
• Turn the switch to position .
  , water flows out of the Connector System several times.

• DE-SCALING, the descaling operation is continued.

Rinsing the Professional Cappuccino Frother

To ensure that the Professional Cappuccino Frother works perfectly, you should rinse it with water whenever you have prepared some milk.

The ENA will not prompt you to rinse the Professional Cappuccino Frother.

• Remove the milk pipe from the milk carton or milk container.
• Fill a receptacle with fresh water and immerse the milk pipe in the water.
• Place another receptacle under the nozzle.
• Set the selector lever of the nozzle to the milk foam or milk position.
  
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch .
  
  appears as soon as the ENA is sufficiently heated.
• Turn the switch to position .
  , the nozzle and pipe are rinsed.
• Turn the switch to position as soon as clean water flows into the receptacle.

Cleaning the Professional Cappuccino Frother

To ensure that the Professional Cappuccino Frother works perfectly, you should clean it daily when you have been preparing milk.

If the wrong cleaning agent is used, the machine could be damaged and/or detergent residues could be left in the water.

• Only use original JURA care products.

The ENA will not prompt you to clean the Professional Cappuccino Frother.
The JURA Auto-Cappuccino Cleaner is available from stockists.

• Remove the milk pipe from the milk carton or milk container.
• Pour 250 ml of fresh water into a receptacle and add one capful (max. 15 ml) of Auto-Cappuccino Cleaner.
• Immerse the milk pipe in the receptacle.
• Place another receptacle under the nozzle.
• Set the selector lever of the nozzle to the milk foam or milk position.
  
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch .
  
  appears as soon as the ENA is sufficiently heated.
• Turn the switch to position .
  , the nozzle and pipe are cleaned.
• Turn the switch clockwise to position as soon as the receptacle holding the Auto-Cappuccino Cleaner is empty.
• Rinse the receptacle thoroughly, fill with 250 ml of fresh water and immerse the milk pipe in the water.

To ensure that the Easy Cappuccino Frother works perfectly, you should rinse it with water whenever you have prepared some milk.

The ENA will not prompt you to rinse the Easy Cappuccino Frother.

• Remove the milk pipe from the milk carton or milk container.
• Fill a receptacle with fresh water and immerse the milk pipe in the water.
• Place another receptacle under the nozzle.
  
• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch .

Dismantling and rinsing the Easy Cappuccino Frother

• Carefully remove the Easy Cappuccino Frother from the Connector System.
• Dismantle the nozzle completely.
  
• Rinse all nozzle parts thoroughly with running water.
• Reassemble the Easy Cappuccino Frother and attach it to the Connector System.

Dismantling and rinsing the 2-stage frothing nozzle

To ensure that the 2-stage frothing nozzle functions correctly, clean it regularly if you have heated or frothed milk.

Danger of burns from the hot nozzle and nozzle connector.

• Wait until the nozzle has cooled before cleaning.

• Carefully remove the nozzle from the Connector System.
• Unscrew the nozzle using the hole on the measuring spoon for pre-ground coffee.
  
• Rinse all three nozzle parts thoroughly under running water.
• Reassemble the nozzle and attach it to the Connector System.

Removing foreign objects

Even the highest-quality coffee beans can contain foreign objects. These can block the grinder.

Danger of injury to the fingers when the grinder is running.

• Switch the machine off with the on/off button before performing any work on the grinder.

• Disconnect the mains plug.
• Remove the bean container cover.
• Remove the coffee beans with a vacuum cleaner.
• Release the screw of the finger guard and remove the finger guard.
  
• Remove the remaining coffee beans with a vacuum cleaner.
• Position the grinder key.
  
• Turn the key counterclockwise until the trapped foreign object is released.
• Remove the foreign object.
• Place the finger guard into the bean container and screw tight.
• Fill the bean container with fresh coffee beans, then close the bean container cover.

Cleaning the bean container

Coffee beans may be covered with a slight oil film which remains on the walls of the bean container. These residues may negatively affect the coffee results. For this reason clean the bean container from time to time.

• Press the on/off button to switch the machine off.
• Disconnect the mains plug.
• Remove the bean container cover.
• Remove the coffee beans with a vacuum cleaner.
• Clean the bean container with a soft, dry cloth.
• Fill the bean container with fresh coffee beans, then close the bean container cover.

Descaling the water tank

Limescale deposits may form in the water tank. To ensure correct function of the machine, descale the water tank from time to time.

• Remove the water tank.
• If a CLARIS plus filter cartridge is used, remove the cartridge.
• Descale the tank with a mild, commercially available descaling agent in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer.
• Rinse the water tank thoroughly.
• If a CLARIS plus filter cartridge is used, replace the cartridge.
• Fill the water tank with cold, fresh water and replace the tank.

CLARIS plus filter cartridge

Water for perfect coffee
Use of a CLARIS plus filter cartridge guarantees you freshly filtered, delicious-tasting coffee and hot water at all times. Designed specially for JURA coffee machines, it has a neutral pH value and is placed directly in the water tank.
Unlike other water filtering systems for domestic use, CLARIS plus works according to the professional up-flow principle. In practical terms this means that only the precise amount of water required for a given beverage is drawn in, and this is filtered directly before use.

No more descaling
If you use the filter cartridge regularly, you will be able to save yourself the time-consuming effort of regular descaling. Your coffee machine will also reward you with a longer service life. Use a CLARIS plus filter cartridge if the water hardness is higher than 10° dH. You can determine the water hardness before using your JURA coffee machine for the first time with the Aquadur® test strip supplied with the machine.

Easy to operate
Inserting the CLARIS plus filter cartridge could not be easier. A description is contained in Chapter 'Preparing and using for the first time – Using and activating filter'.

Economical use
After 50 litres of water have been dispensed or after two months at the latest, the filter capacity will be reached. The cartridge must then be replaced. Your JURA coffee machine will prompt you to change the filter. This procedure is described in detail in Chapter 'Maintenance – Changing the filter following a prompt'.
You can return used filter cartridges to the stockist.

Maintenance and storage
The CLARIS plus filter cartridge only needs to be removed from the water tank if you are away for a prolonged period of time or if you wish to clean or descale the tank using a conventional product.
If you do plan to be away for some time (e.g. on holiday), we recommend that you store the filter cartridge as follows: Remove the cartridge from the water tank. Place it in a glass with about two centimetres of water and put it in the fridge.
We recommend that you prepare about half a litre of water through the machine before starting to make coffee again. The water could be discoloured, but this is not harmful to your health.

Display messages

Message	Cause/Result	Action
FILL WATER TANK	The water tank is empty. You cannot prepare any coffee specialities, hot water or steam.	Fill the water tank (refer to Chapter 'Preparing and using for the first time – Filling the water tank').
EMPTY GROUNDS	The coffee grounds container is full. You cannot prepare any coffee specialities, but you can prepare hot water or steam.	Empty the coffee grounds container and the drip tray.
TRAY MISSING	The drip tray is not inserted correctly or is not inserted at all. You cannot prepare any coffee specialities, hot water or steam.	Insert the drip tray.
FILL BEANS	The bean container is empty. You cannot prepare any coffee specialities, but you can prepare hot water or steam.	Fill the bean container (refer to Chapter 'Preparing and using for the first time – Filling the bean container').
CLEAN	The ENA is prompting you to clean the machine.	Clean the machine (refer to Chapter 'Maintenance – Cleaning the machine following a prompt').
DE-SCALE	The ENA is prompting you to descale it.	Descale the machine (refer to Chapter 'Maintenance – Descaling the machine following a prompt').
FILTER	Once 50 litres of water have flowed through the CLARIS plus filter cartridge, its capacity is reached.	Replace the CLARIS plus filter cartridge (refer to Chapter 'Maintenance – Replacing the filter following a prompt').
NOT ENOUGH PRE-GROUND	There is too little pre-ground coffee in the machine. The ENA stops the operation.	The next time you make coffee use more pre-ground coffee (refer to Chapter 'Preparation – Pre-ground coffee').
TOO HOT	The system is too hot to begin a maintenance programme.	Wait for several minutes until the system has cooled or prepare a coffee speciality or hot water.

Troubleshooting

Problem	Cause/Result	Action
Grinder is making a very loud noise	There are foreign objects in the grinder.	Remove the foreign objects (see Chapter 'Maintenance – Removing foreign objects').
The nozzle does not produce enough milk foam	The nozzle is either in the wrong position or is dirty.	Adjust the position of the nozzle (refer to Chapter 'Preparation – Cappuccino'). Rinse the nozzle (refer to Chapter 'Maintenance – Rinsing the nozzle').
Coffee only drips out during preparation	Coffee or pre-ground coffee has been ground too finely and is blocking the sieve.	Adjust the grinder or use coarser preground coffee (see Chapter 'Preparing and using for the first time – Adjusting grinder').
Water hardness cannot be adjusted	The CLARIS plus filter cartridge is activated.	Deactivate the CLARIS plus filter cartridge in programming mode.
FILL BEANS is displayed although the bean container has been filled	The grinder is not yet completely filled with beans.	Prepare a coffee speciality.
FILL WATER TANK is displayed although the water tank is full	The water tank float is trapped.	Descale the water tank (refer to Chapter 'Maintenance – Descaling the water tank').
ERROR 2 is displayed	If the device is exposed to the cold for a long period of time, the heating function is disabled for safety reasons.	Wait until the machine has reached room temperature.
Other ERROR messages are displayed	–	Switch the ENA off with the on/off button. Contact Customer Support in your country. Contact information is available on the company website at www.jura.com.

Transport/Emptying the system

Keep the packaging of your ENA. It should be used to protect the machine during transportation.
In order to protect the ENA from frost during transportation, the system must be emptied.

Precondition: appears on the display.

• Turn the Rotary Switch until is displayed.
• Press the Rotary Switch .
  
  appears as soon as the ENA is sufficiently heated.
• Turn the switch to position .
  , hot steam is discharged from the nozzle.
• Remove and empty the water tank.
  Steam will continue to be discharged from the nozzle until the system is empty.
  
• Press the on/off button to switch the machine off.
• Turn the switch to position .

The next time you use the machine the system must be refilled (see Chapter 'Preparing and using your ENA for the first time – First-time use').

These safeguards apply for machines with UL safety test (see rating plate and chapter 'Technical data').

Follow the basic safety precautions
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed, to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and/or injury to persons, including the following:

• Read all instructions.
• Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs.
• 
  To protect against fire, electric shock and injury to persons, do not immerse cord, plugs, or body of machine in water or other liquid.
• Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children.
• Unplug from outlet when not in use and before cleaning. Allow to cool before putting or taking off parts, and before cleaning the appliance.
• Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug or after the appliance malfunctions, or has been damaged in any manner. Return appliance to the nearest authorized service facility for examination, repair or adjustment.

Special cord set instructions

1. A short power supply cord is provided to reduce the risk resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a long cord.
   Your ENA has a 3-pin grounded plug.
2. Longer extension cords are available and may be used if care is exercised in their use.
3. If an extension cord is used,
   1. the marked electrical rating of the extension cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance, and
   2. if the appliance is of the grounded type, the extension courd should be a grounding type 3-wire cord, and
   3. the longer cord shall be arranged so that it will not drape over the counter top or tabletop where it can be pulled on by children of tripped over.

• As a safety feature, this plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way.
• If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician.
• Do not modify the plug in any way or attempt to defeat this safety feature.

To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not remove any service covers. No user serviceable parts inside. Repair should be done by authorized personnel only.

This appliance is for household use. Any servicing other than cleaning and user maintenance should be performed by an authorized service representative:

• Do not immerse base in water or try to disassemble.

• Never fill instant coffee, chocolate mix etc. into the grinder or ground coffee funnel (grunder by-pass). It will damage the functioning of the brewing chamber.
• Never fill sugar coated coffee beans into the bean hopper. In case of doubt, call your dealer.
• Never fill anything other than coffee beans into the bean container (no chocolate, no rice, no nuts, no spices, nothing other than roasted coffee beans).
• Never do anything with the machine which is not described in the User's Manual. In case of doubt, call your dealer.

For your safety

Please read and note the following important safety information carefully.
This can prevent potentially fatal injury due to electric shock:

• Never use a machine which has been damaged or which has a defective power cable.
• If there are any signs of damage, for example if there is a smell of burning, unplug the machine from the mains supply immediately and contact the JURA service centre.
• If the power cable for this machine is damaged, it must be repaired either directly by JURA or by a JURA approved service centre.
• Make sure that the ENA and the power cable are not located close to hot surfaces.
• Be careful to ensure that the power cable does not become trapped and does not rub against sharp edges.
• Never open and repair the machine yourself. Do not modify the machine in any way that is not described in the ENA manual. The machine contains live parts. If opened, there is a danger of fatal injury. Repairs may only be carried out by JURA approved service centres, using original spare parts and accessories.

There is a risk of scalds and burns from the spouts or the nozzle:

• Place the machine out of the reach of children.
• Do not touch any hot parts. Use the handles provided.
• Be careful to ensure that the appropriate nozzle is correctly installed and clean. The nozzle or parts of the nozzle could become detached if the parts are not assembled correctly or a blockage occurs.

A defective machine is not safe and could cause injury or fire. To avoid damage and any associated risk of injury or fire:

• Never allow the power cable to hang down loosely. The power cable can trip someone or be damaged.
• Protect your ENA from environmental influences such as rain, frost and direct sunlight.
• Do not put the ENA, cable or connections in water.
• Do not put the ENA or any individual parts in the dishwasher.
• Turn your ENA off and disconnect the mains plug before starting any cleaning operation. Always wipe your ENA with a damp cloth, never a wet cloth, and protect it from constant water splashes.
• Only connect the machine to a power supply in accordance with the information on the rating plate. The rating plate is located on the underside of your ENA. Further technical data is given in 'Technical Data' Chapter.
• Use only original JURA care products. Use of accessories that are not explicitly recommended by JURA could damage the ENA.
• Do not use any coffee beans treated with additives or caramelised coffee beans.
• Always fill the water tank with cold, fresh water.
• If you are absent for a prolonged period of time, turn the machine off.

Risk to children and persons with limited capabilities in operating machines:

• The machine is not designed to be operated by children and persons with limited capabilities.
• The machine may only be used by persons who are able to operate the machine safely.

Safe handling of the CLARIS plus filter cartridges:

• CLARIS plus filter cartridges should be kept out of the reach of children.
• Store them dry in the sealed package.
• Protect them from heat and direct sunlight.
• Do NOT use damaged CLARIS plus filter cartridges.
• Do NOT open CLARIS filter cartridges.
