ALAMO INDUSTRIAL TRAXX FLAILHEAD OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS ALAMO INDUSTRIAL TRAXX Flailheads are manufactured with quality material by skilled workers. These flailheads are designed for maintaining grass, weeds, brush and small trees. For best results operate the machine as low to the ground as possible without the flails or hammers striking the ground or other obstructions.
OPERATION 1. OPERATOR REQUIREMENTS Safe operation of the unit is the responsibility of a qualified operator. A qualified operator has read and understands the implement and tractor Operator’s Manuals and is experienced in implement and tractor operation and all associated safety practices. In addition to the safety messages contained in this manual, safety signs are affixed to the implement and tractor.
OPERATION 2. CONNECTING THE FLAILHEAD TO THE TRAXX RF Use extreme caution when connecting the Flailhead to the TRAXX RF. The Flailhead should be securely resting at ground level. Keep hands and feet out from under the Flailhead and clear of pinch points between the TRAXX RF and Flailhead.
OPERATION 2.1 Attachment Procedure Tools Required: 3/4” (19mm) Wrench 1. Position Traxx RF square and centered to the flailhead. 2. Remove flailhead fittings. 3. Lower Traxx RF toolbar to a height that is lower than the lugs on the flailhead mounting bracket. 4.
OPERATION 8. Configure the following settings in the Traxx RF control panel: Attachment Settings: attachment type and width. Float settings: float calibration (initial install only) 2.2 Removing the Flailhead Removal of the flailhead is a reversal of the attachment procedure. Select a firm level site on which to remove and store the flailhead.
OPERATION 4. FLAILHEAD CONTROLS Operators must wear personal safety gear at all times while operating the machine and stand in a safe operating position with a clear view of the machinery and the work area. 4.1 Controls Identification for Flailhead Operation Refer to the Traxx RC56/RC75 Operation Manual for complete details of machine controls.
OPERATION 5.FRONT HOOD The Flailhead is fitted with a hydraulic ram to allow movement of the hinged hood, by default on every start- up movement of this ram is electronically deactivated to stop operators inadvertently opening the hood when cutting alongside the highway; this reduces the risk to passing traffic from being hit by objects ejected at speed from the working flail head.
OPERATION The hood is capable of being raised to any position between fully closed and fully open. When operating the machine with the hood open, it should only be raised to a position that is slightly above the height of the material being cut;...
OPERATION 6.3 Skid Height Adjustment Side skids should be set to a height just above that of the rear roller. Skids are a protection feature that restrict cutting debris and/or objects from being ejected under the side casings; in normal working conditions they should remain clear of the ground with the machine running on the rear roller.
OPERATION 8. ROTOR OPERATION 8.1 Rotor Direction For grass cutting with Y-flails the rotor can be operated in either ‘uphill’ or ‘downhill’ cutting direction; uphill is usually the preferred choice for best cutting results but downhill can be used where circumstance or conditions demand.
OPERATION 9.DRIVE BELT Machinery must be switched off and the main isolater key removed before attempting to in- spect or access the belt drive housing. 9.1 Drive Belt Check Tools Required:17mm Wrench The machines drive belt should be inspected regularly and checked for signs of wear or loss of tension.
OPERATION 9.2 Belt Tension Belt tension setting is; 9mm deflection at mid-point of belt run under 5 Kgs (10lbs) of force. Avoid over- tensioning the belt as this can cause excessive wear on main drive bearings. 9.3 Adjusting Belt Tension Belt Tensioning Procedure •...
OPERATION 9.4 Belt Pulley Adjustment The belt pulleys are secured in position on their shafts by taperlock bushings; when replacing pulleys the lower pulley must be fitted to the rotor shaft first, the pulley and taperlock should be located as far as possible onto the shaft at a minimal distance from casing components and secured with the taperlock.
MAINTENANCE LUBRICATION Lubricate grease points indicated below using a good quality lithium-based grease. In the event of anomalies or faults, proceed immediately to find the cause of such problem Grease Point Locations New Machines - Initial Checks After the first 2 hours of use the following points should be checked on new machines. •...
