Explosion and fire could result.  If there is natural or gas leakage in area, do not start engine.  Do not use pressurized starting fluids because vapors are flammable. WARNING Rapid retraction of starter cord (kickback) will pull hand and arm toward engine faster than you can let go.

  • Page 12 CONTROLS 3.3 STARTING ENGINE STOP IDLE FAST CHOKE 3.3.1 Control Lever  FOR STARTING A COLD ENGINE: Move the Control Lever to the choke position.  FOR RESTARTING A WARM ENGINE: Do not use the choke when the engine is warm. Move the control Level slightly past the idle position.

WARNING Improperly maintaining this engine, or failure to correct a problem before operation, can cause a malfunction in which you can be seriously hurt or killed. Always follow the inspection and maintenance recommendations and schedules in this owner’s manual.

Refill the tank if the fuel level is low. Refuel in a well-ventilated area before starting the engine. If the engine has been running, allow it to cool.

  • Page 17 MAINTENANCE 5. Measure the spark plug electrode gap with a suitable gauge. The gap should be 0.028 - 0.031 in (0.70 - 0.80 mm). Correct the gap, if necessary, by carefully bending the side electrode. 6. Install the spark plug carefully, by hand, to avoid cross-threading. 7.

The following steps will help to keep rust and corrosion from impairing your engine’s function and appearance, and will make the engine easier to start after storage.
  • Page 19 STORAGE/ TRANSPORTING DRAINING THE FUEL TANK AND CARBURETOR 1. Place approved gasoline container below the carburetor, and use a funnel to avoid spilling CARBURETOR fuel. FLOAT BOWL 2. Remove the carburetor drain bolt SEALING WASHER and sealing washer, and then move the fuel valve lever to the ON position.
  • Page 20 STORAGE/ TRANSPORTING is partially or completely filled. The air in a partially filled fuel tank promotes fuel deterioration. Very warm storage temperatures accelerate fuel deterioration. Gasoline will oxidize and deteriorate in storage. Deteriorated gasoline will cause hard starting, and it leaves gum deposits that clog the fuel system.
