To balance the vertically moving mass, leaden counterweights are installed in the handwheel. The rotary drive movement is converted into a vertical movement of the horizontal cylinder (fig.
  • Page 13 Rotary Microtome HM 325 The selected thickness is delivered at the upper reversal point of the vertical movement. The horizontal cylinder together with the specimen moves forwards by the value of the section thickness, which can be selected on the knob (fig. 1.7). This value is shown on the indexed wheel (fig.

  • Page 18: Specimen Coarse Feed And Trimming Stages

Rotary Microtome HM 325 Fig. 6 Micrometer spindle Micrometer nut 4-2-2 Specimen coarse feed and trimming stages After changing the specimen, moving the knife or knife carrier, it is necessary to adjust the specimen to the knife edge again. This can easily be done by means of the specimen coarse feed with trimming stage.
  • Page 19 Rotary Microtome HM 325 The movement of the handwheel (fig. 5.19) for the coarse feed cannot be used as a criterium for perfect feed settings, as the toothed wheels and links have play. The movement of the coarse feed is limited. When the front or back end position of the specimen feed is reached, clear resistances can be noticed.
  • Page 20: Functional Description Of The Trimming Function

Rotary Microtome HM 325 4-2-3 Functional description of the trimming function The feed can be carried out in graduated trimming stages. Trimming stages of 10 µm and 30 µm are available. For trimming stage 1 (10 µm), press the trimming key (fig. 1.4) down until a first resistance can be felt and turn the handwheel clockwise at the same time.
  • Page 21: Maintenance Methodology

Maintenance level I can be performed by the user himself and is exactly described in the instruction manual. Maintenance level III must be performed in the factory of MICROM International GmbH in Walldorf. For this reason, it is necessary to return the rotary microtome in its original packing.
